Gracepoint (Broadchurch) Discussion

So tonight we get the American version of David Tennant's successful Broadchurch series...

This version ALSO stars David Tennant in the same role.

I am very interested to see how he adapts his character to an American setting... And frankly, I'll be interested to see if he really dives into the character like he did on Broadchurch, or just kind of dials it in.

My wife, a HUGE DT fan is already complaining about his hairstyle and the facial hair.

Thoughts? Expectations? Apprehensions?

Also good to see Anna Gunn return to TV after her Emmy awarding wining role on Breaking Bad.

I'll be surprised if Gracepoint comes anywhere close to Broadchurch. I still don't understand why they did a remake.

On the surface, it's just yet another UK import on US TV... We've stolen your best stuff for decades.

I just find it funny that DT is playing the same role in, from what he describes, almost the same exact way, albeit with an American accent.

Guess the one thing that Gracepoint has going for it is that it's airing on mainstream FTA station in both Canada and the U.S so it could get a larger audience (and more people who didn't see Broadchurch) as opposed to more specialty channels in cable (in Canada it was shown on Showcase).

Won't be watching though - it seems too much like the original for me.

He had the facial hair and bad hair in Broadchurch too. Did she miss that?

The first episode was good, if a little too much like Broadchurch. Be interesting to see where is diverges.

It's a murder mystery. They're not glorifying violence against children. I enjoyed it. Christ, is Tennant such a prick I'm the British version?

I know Gracepoint is on Global (seen enough ads for it) but was referring to Broadchurch which to my knowledge was run as a Showcase "exclusive".

Ah my bad, I thought "Showcase was part of Basic Cable , but its on Classic, what ever that is? well it looks like, "Gracepoint is likely to be Cancelled

So Gracepoint might not even make it to it's 10 episodes.

Probably comes too soon after Broadchurch and has started off two similar to the original.

Nope... She complained about it during Broadchurch as well..

I'm going to wait and binge watch all 10 episodes like I did witch Broadchurch, but there's no way they're going to cancel the show.

BBC America viewership of Broadchurch had nothing to do with how many people watched Gracepoint.

There are about 10 people in this country who saw Broadchurch, and 5 who knew that Gracepoint was connected to it. No, this is failing on it's own.

Definitely lacking something from the original. At first I thought it was the caliber of the actors and that indeed may be but now I think it's something deeper as well. Seems to me that the American characters are too closely patterned after the British characters (the scripts of the first episodes seem almost identical, as well as the shots) and there are intrinsic differences between US and UK mores, customs, attitudes, etc.

Too soon and too slavish is my verdict.

I haven't seen or even heard of the original, but I very much liked the first episode of Gracepoint. You can't base too much on a first episode, but I think I will enjoy the series.
