Spoilers General Prodigy plot-arc speculation thread...

Hey everybody,

It seems a number of different questions related to the plot arc of Prodigy have already been discussed in multiple threads. These include:
  • How did several children from Alpha Quadrant species end up in the Delta Quadrant - with apparently no knowledge of the Federation?
  • Why did Starfleet send this ship halfway across the galaxy only a few years after Voyager got back?
  • How did the Protostar get stuck inside a planetoid?
  • Why is the Diviner looking for the Protostar really?
  • What is Dal's species/What is the Divener's/Gwyn's species/What is Murf's species?
  • Speculation regarding the actual time frame of the show being different from what was initially announced (much further into the future, or even in the past).
I figure rather than having chatter in each weekly thread, it would make sense to have a one-stop shop for it. Let this be the place.

Currently thinking the Protostar was on a training mission wherein the crew would be tasked with making their way through the Delta Quadrant in somewhat of a recreation of Voyager's mission.
Made possible, perhaps, by the Proto-Engine.
This would perhaps explain the presence of a hologram based on Janeway, and the way in which she described her purpose in episode 3.

Orrr... The Protostar was another drive testbed that got lost in the middle of nowhere and the crew (shocker), before whatever took them away from the ship, had the computer generate a fitting holographic advisor to assist in their return to UFP space.

The crystals they were all mining and their apparent cloaking properties might yield an answer as to why the Protostar was hidden there. Though that assumes it was hidden there, and not just rammed into that big rock by accident of navigation or drive failure.

In Star Trek Beyond, the Franklin was initially 'just' crashed and became deliberately hidden later.

Hey everybody,
  • What is Dal's species/What is the Divener's/Gwyn's species/What is Murf's species?
Gwyn and the Diviner are Vau N'Akat. According to StarTrek.com, their homeworld is the planet Solum, which is why Gwyn is called "Progeny of Solum".

Was the Franklin "deliberately hidden"? She was partially visible even when buried, and Krall/Edison had no misconceptions as to her whereabouts. Jaylah applied cloaks but also booby traps against random looters, and both create a distinction vs. the Protostar.

Having the ship in Delta is sort of trivial if the transwarp drive is one of the better ones. Just about anything could have happened, and probably in an accident that involved the live crew evacuating in pods and shuttles before Alpha was left behind. And the general lack of situational awareness demonstrated by holo-Janeway would seem out of place in a ship dedicated to teaching cadets or the like (she really seems built for that) and first ending up in Delta, then evacuating - Teachie would have had rather high odds of being turned on while in Delta, then.

The Diviner could be simply interested in the new drive, but I rather doubt it will be anything as trivial as that. Better warp might already be a thing in Delta, so that even the Kazon now reap some benefits.

A deliberate mission to Delta seems a bit unlikely for a training ship. And there are a couple of things speaking for this specific and limiting role: the vast difference in accommodation standards between crew and leadership, the presence of great assembly spaces next to obvious training locations such as bridge and engine room, and means of moving lots of people aka classes to and fro at once. Although all of that still remains far from really said. I rather hope for a slowish unfolding, rather than a literal cut-to-the-chase, even in a show that is so obviously about a chase.

If the season has 20 eps (and Chakotay is slated to appear in seven of them), he could very well be an Inspector Clouseau-type figure who's just one step behind the Protostar.

Actually, Prodigy has 10 episodes per season.
If you ask me, that's a bit too short... I'd prefer at least 13 to 15 episodes considering their short duration... or 10 episodes but 35 - 45 mins run time per each.

I just can't wait until Riker shows up in the finale.

I sincerely hope Riker doesn't come anywhere near Prodigy. Seeing him on Lower Decks and in ST: Picard was good enough.
Don't need to milk him anymore.
Its Chakotay who needs his fair screen time... and I hope it will be as good if not better than Riker's. :-)

The first season will be 20 episodes, not 10, as many of us had believed. It was clarified in yesterday’s renewal/hiatus and return announcement that the first season will be 20 episodes, with the second 10 airing at a later date in 2022 after episodes 6-10 stream beginning on January 6th.

And, as others have pointed out, this article from Deadline about Prodigy had them listed as a 20 episode first season from as far back as February, so it isn’t really entirely new information.

Huh... thank you both for that.
Its the first time I hear about season 1 having 20 episodes as opposed to just 10. All previous sources indicated 10 episodes per season.

This is a pleasant surprise.
I just hope the show maintains quality (given the animated nature of it) and continues the buildup and that we get good sense of how far the UFP advanced since VOY returned (I also don't want to see the technology destroyed or UFP being rid of it for whatever reason as it was frequently done in the past).
Oh and Rober Beltran better get some great lines and hope he sticks around as I'd love to see Chakotay back in action.

Nice surprise on the episode count for the season, and I'm very pleased that it's been renewed for another year. I'm presuming/hoping that the various breaks in the season won't make it feel as bloated as the final season of The Walking Dead. :D

Here's hoping that it continues the good start the show's had.

The whole order 2 seasons when first greenlighting is a cost thing with animation. The investment up front is ginormous, so they tend to prefer ensuring a certain level of returns that 2 seasons promises.
Figure what they've done is rolled the second season into the first and then tacked on another order on top.

It made sense that Riker shows up in the TNG-heavy shows, so this time it could be Chakotay, who's supposed to appear anyway

Chakotay AND Admiral Janeway (though the Admiral doesn't have to appear immediately - and it will be interesting to see how Chakotay interacts with Janeway hologram, and maybe even admiral Janeway with herself).

But can they afford to bring on Admiral Janeway's voice actor?

Its the same voice actor, so its not an issue.
But I'm thinkin that the kids may end up meeting the flesh and blood admiral Janeway once the main arc in season 1 is over.
