Gene Barry (1919-2009)

This passed under the radar, but-

Not reported by any news outlets yet, but The Washington Post has confirmed the death of actor Gene Barry Dec. 9 in Woodland Hills, Calif., at age 90.
Perhaps not a household name now, but for 20 years Barry was a major TV star as the sharply-dressed lawmen of the series "Bat Masterson" and "Burke's Law." He began his career on Broadway opposite Mae West in "Catherine Was Great" (1944) and starred in the 1953 alien-invasion film "War of the Worlds."

I watch WOTW at least three times a year. GB's performance as Doctor Clayton Forrester (Yep, that's where the name came from) was understated but solid--a rare movie scientist who got on with both religious and military folk. His scenes during the LA panic scenes were scary all by themselves.

RIP, Sir.

I was watching Bat Masterson this morning...RIP Gene Barry.

:(

One of my Dad's favourite actors, watched Burke's Law, Bat Masterson and Name of the Game when I was a little kid. Really liked them.

Liked his style. Another good one gone.

I had tried to start a thread but it got messed up.

I've been a fan from Bat all the way through. Where is ti still watchable???

RIP gracious sir.

I see it in the morning time on My Network TV/This

WRLH-DT2 in my area.

Oh, so sorry to see this! I consider WOTW with Gene Barry far superior to that mess we saw with Tom Cruise in it, SPFX notwithstanding.

I remember him mainly as Dr. Forrester in the 1953 The War of the Worlds and as Glenn Howard on The Name of the Game, which we watched every week. One notable episode from that series ("LA 2017") featured Barry alone out of the regular cast, and was an early directing credit for Steven Spielberg.

Someone above mentioned his voice; I can still hear it in my mind now - very distinctive.

Apart from War of the Worlds, I only really know him from The Adventurer, which is not quite as bad as its reputation suggests - which may be damning with faint praise, but that's about the best I can manage. Sadly, Mr Barry himself just seems to be going through the motions in that series - though I suppose it doesn't help that he's frightfully miscast and that the concept of the character is unbelievable from the start.
