Lindsey Collins tells Collider that during a recent lunch conversation, Weaver spilled the beans on the alternate cut. “We had lunch with Sigourney [Weaver] who was telling us that there actually used to be an R-rated version of that movie which was awesome. It was the director’s cut and it was R-rated and everybody was swearing and there were sex scenes, and the whole thing,” Collins said. “They didn’t know what to do with it, so they had to re-edit the whole thing and made it what it is today. We were like, ‘How do we get our hands on the R-rated version ofGalaxy Quest?’ She said ‘I don’t know!’ and we were like, ‘Come on, Sigourney!’”

a comedy meant for a wide audience (PG) for the biggest $$ return.

according to the Trekweb review of the deleted scenes on the GALAXY QUEST - DELUXE EDITION ON BLU-Ray
A collection of eight deleted scenes running nearly 12 minutes in length are included on the Blu-ray, seven of which were ported from the first DVD release.

On "Alex Tours His Personalized Quarters", we have an introduction by Parisot, Rickman, and Allen about the scene, while on "Sweet Serenity at Last" (the most recently added deleted scene), Parisot discusses the concept of the scene involving the rock monster coda.
since they already released a deluxe version in 2009 on Blu-ray I highly doubt we'll see a Director's cut though it is Paramount and we all know how they like to double dip Trek fans. It's possible...

I know they cut an F-bomb, but I'd be surprised if the movie has many R-rated scenes that were cut. It just doesn't have that tone at all.

I'm pretty happy with the Blu-Ray, anyway. Great movie.

The original draft of the script was intended to be R-rated, but all that stuff was changed before filming even began. Cutting Siggy's "fuck this!" is the only reduction for a rating, and that was only in the UK, to get a PG instead of a 12 or 15....

That was cut in the US, too. They changed it to "screw, this!" to get a PG instead of a PG-13 (or an R).

Yeah, what I mean is they changed because of advance advice from the BBFC, IIRC... But they changed the master print, like...

I'll believe it when I see it.

Yeah, I already couldn't believe Sigourney Weaver's rack in the original version. Imagine the size of R version...

This calls for a picture.

I'd be interested to know if the original draft made more of Tech Seargent Chen's affinity for weed. It's heavily implied in the filmed version, but more as a bunch of background events than anything referenced directly. Even before this news, that was always one element where I wondered if they cut material.

Well considering a scene cut from the film (and as far as I'm aware not included in any deleted scenes) involved Weaver's character being asked to sign a "Photoshopped" picture which had Weaver's head pasted over top of a specially shot photo of Playboy model Petra Verkaik (I'll let you google her - just remember NSFW), I can imagine quite a lot!

I do remember seeing an image of this image online at some point (because I recall ET or some such show covering Petra's appearance in the movie).

This is one instance when I think they were right to go in a more innocent, family-friendly direction. Just seems like a better fit with the story and the more optimistic spirit of the original Trek.

Was about to post this. I saw mention of this the other day somewhere else, and it just didn't sit right with me. An R-rated cut just sounds too mean for this subject matter.

I wish we'd gotten the R-rated version. It might have done decent business.

The stuff they cut out, particularly Weaver's character vamping for the lizard guys, is hysterical and would have worked really well in the movie.

What we did get was always intended to mock the so-called "innocence" of Trek and fandom to a mild degree - the lead character is a lonely egotist who drinks himself stupid at night, and the poor guy who played the alien clearly considers his fandom to be composed of idiots.

Back when IGN was Filmforce, they had an interview with the Galaxy Quest writer David Howard. Here's the link...

IGN is almost impossible to go into anymore due to webpage problems.

Unfortuneately, the last page of the interview is unavailable but Gordon stated they had a PG and PG-13 version of the movie. The PG-13 version had more language and you can see at least two instances in the film where the original dialogue is overdubbed.

I think Galaxy Quest is fine how it is. It's a legitimately funny movie.

Galaxy Quest is a great movie as it is, but I don't see how an R-rated cut would have hurt it. Since the whole point of the movie is that the shallow, egotistical actors learn to live up to the standards of their characters (and fans), an R-rated version might have worked even better.

You can find some of the deleted scenes on Youtube, and some of them are pretty good. I wouldn't mind seeing them added to the film.

But making it an R-rated movie would really spoil the charm of the movie. Seeing the Kirk or Spock analogues dropping F-bombs would be funny once, maybe. Having them throughout the movie? Naw. It would totally mess with the tone of the movie. I'm not sure what sex scenes would add, although maybe something more graphic with Monk and tentacle girl could have set up an amusing pay off.

What's optimism got to do with anything? You can't be raunchy and optomistic at the same time?

Only in puritanical America...

Forget a literal R-rated version of Galaxy Quest - this is a great idea for another send up of space opera. Someone needs to write an R-rated version, maybe something that plays a little more off of the faux-gritty ad naseum of nuBSG...
