The Arrowverse just keeps on expanding. The latest installment is a new animated web series called Freedom Fighters: The Ray which will be coming to CW Seed in 2017.

Raymond “Ray” Terrill was a reporter who discovered a group of government scientists working on a secret project to turn light into a weapon of mass destruction. But before he could report on his findings, the project head exposed Ray to a “genetic light bomb.” The bomb failed to kill him and instead gifted Ray with light-based powers. With these abilities, Ray realized he could go beyond reporting on injustice – he could take action to help stop it. Calling himself The Ray, he was recruited by Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters to fight violence and oppression wherever it exists.

The Ray will be the first gay superhero to lead a show and the plan is to cast a voice actor who will also appear on one of the live-action shows. You can read more here.

A version of The Ray got a four-issue series a couple of years ago with no mention of the Freedom Fighters but since the group is included in the show's title, I assume we'll see them at some point. That's assuming they don't change the title. You can read about the team here.

So, another DC hero in name only, with a backstory stolen from the Golden Age Ray and the appearance of the second Ray? Yeah, CW has way too much acess to DC properties. I bet CW's Uncle Sam will a russian communist from the cold war who hates democracy. Maybe they'll have a Phantom Lady who has no super powers but crushes people with a mech suit. They'll probably also have a Doll Man whose power is that he can grow 12 feet tall, a Black Condor who swims really fast and breathes underwater, and a Human Bomb who doesn't blow up. To be clear, I'm not pissed at them making him gay (I couldn't care less about that), I'm pissed the fact he is basically just an original character with some stolen DC hero backstory.

Why can't DC put up a good, old fashioned embargo on CW? Let them keep what they have, maybe let them have a few villains, but keep them away from the superheroes. I can't believe we live in a world where WB/DC wouldn't let Bruce Timm use Ted Kord, the JSA or the Bat-family, but will let CW do whatever the hell they want with 90% of the heroes that aren't in the movies. I really hope this bombs and they aren't allowed to ruin the Freedom fighters. Russian Uncle Sam would just be depressing.

I'd have thought that the Vixen cartoon would have bombed enough to stop something like this. That character's cartoon was barely mentioned by anyone when it was coming out, and I'm pretty sure 80-90% of the CW superhero show audience never even heard of it (I barely heard about it and I'm obsessed with seeing superhero stuff, I never bothered to watch Vixen because it only ties into Arrow, which is garbage). They should have just let the idea of mediocre cartoons connected to the Flashverse die.

The only enjoyable DC material right now is on CW. It's not like The Ray is getting a movie anytime soon.

Yeah, but even then its 50/50, with Flash and Legends of Tomorrow on the good side, and the others on the junk side. No one who works on Arrow should even be allowed to use Green Arrow, much less The Ray, Vixen or anyone else. If they could guarantee that only the Flash/LoT crew were working on characters like Ray, well I'd still dislike this version but I'd be open to the idea of the character and the Freedom Force being used. That's why I'm excited for the JSA in LoT, because the Arrow writers aren't anywhere near the characters. But you just know the Freedom Fighters are going to Arrow. Its the worst superhero show on CW, but they still pretend its the "flagship" show.

The Flash and LoT should get exclusive use of any hero that isn't already in the Arrow and Supergirl "families". Until then, I'd almost rather see them never used. Heck, even Snyder using them would be better then the Arrow writers/producers using them. As bad as Snyder's movies are, even his worst characters are still superior to post-Season 3 Arrow characters.

Same production company, not the same people. Each show has its own showrunner and writing staff.

Yeah. There are obviously connections, but its easy to tell that the show with Felicity the Terrible and Oliver the Whiny is not written/made by the same people as Flash/Legends of Tomorrow. The differences in competence and writing quality between Arrow and the other two shows is staggering.

I'm not Arrow's biggest fan, but writing-wise it's Shakespeare compared to the mind-numbing idiocy of LoT.

 I really enjoy Legends of Tomorrow, and loathe "The Felicity Show co-starring Green Arrow". One show has stupid plot points, but good characters and exciting events. The other is about a whiny jerk named Felicity who likes to cry at the drop of the hat and makes bizarre demands of supporting character of Oliver Queen ( who quits being a hero every five seconds, between arguments with the whiny character).

Give me the show that has to keep delaying the main villain's death by making the main characters (likeable) idiots over listening to Oliver and Felicity's idiotic relationship drama and day of the week.

I am glad that I'm not the only one who dislikes Felicity's role in the show, though my dial only goes up to 10.... :p

I used to like her, until probably near the end of Season 3. Then, in the beginning of Season 4 she became one of the reasons I just had to stop watching the show. It just became a soap opera about the relationship drama between her and Oliver at that point, with a bit of superhero action every so often.

Not really familiar with The Ray, but a this point I'll watch anything Berlanti and co. make.

Well, the CW shows have really won me back this season (outside of Flash that didn't need to win me back), even Arrow, so I'd be interested in seeing Ray in some action at some point, even if this still seems like a lame version of the character. I don't bother with the animated CW stuff (to the point where the Legends of Tomorrow Vixen is the only CW version of Vixen I've seen), so I doubt I'll see any of the animated stuff, but if he shows up on one of the shows it could be interesting.

So its Freedom Fighters without Uncle Sam, in a world with a Nazi Flash/Arrow/Supergirl and still using that atrocious Red Tornado design even though its an alternate universe. Its not every day you see something so stupid. I bet Arrow writers worked on it, its about their level of garbage.

I'm really not surprised. I tried to watch Vixen after it came out as a movie compliation of all the episodes, and it was the worst DC animated thing I've seen in a long time (and I'm including Justice League War, The Killing Joke and Batman & Son in that statement). So, it makes sense that this would be equally as bad. Hopefully this never infects Flash or Legends of Tomorrow, and they keep Ray and his crap universe as just an animated thing.

Interesting. I wonder, will the whole thing be on Earth X, or will The Ray come to Earth One? I know they cast a voice actor who could also play the role in live action, as they did with Vixen (and her sister Kuasa, who's apparently showing up on Legends of Tomorrow this season).

Speaking of which, was that the same Red Tornado actor from Supergirl?
