Oh dear. :( The season has gone off to a terrible start for Robert Kubica:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/9388940.stm

Robert Kubica's Formula 1 career is under threat after his right hand was partially severed in a high-speed rally crash in Italy on Sunday.

He also suffered arm and leg fractures after his car hit a church wall.

Kubica who drives for the British-based Renault F1 team, had seven hours of surgery after he was airlifted to a hospital near Genoa.

The 26-year-old Pole looks at least likely to miss the entire 2011 season, which starts in Bahrain on 13 March.

The new Renault looked very promising in testing as well. We'll see what sort of recovery Kubica makes in the next few months.

His place will probably now be fought over between the reserves, Bruno Senna and Romain Grosjean, so that will be interesting.

Who was the teenager* who thought he was still in go-karts last season? He was good value for money, taking out all the minor deities of F1 in their expensive cars.

*perhaps 20.

That would be Jaime Alguersuari, the first active F1 driver to be born during the 1990s. He had a funny season last year, taking on the mighty Schumi in one memorable race.

There was also that other driver, Kamui Kobayashi, who is a few years older, but a much crazier driver than most of the grid. :D I'm glad that he's been retained for 2011.

Oh yes Kobayashi's great. He always gets a furious driver marching up to him and shouting in his face before flouncing off to the pits.

Jenson Button certainly has some fond memories of Kobayashi. :guffaw:

Kobayashi's finest moment to date came in Valencia last year when, with a light fuel tank, he made his only pit stop for soft tyres very late in the race and sliced through the field (including a bemused Fernando Alonso) to claim some much-needed points.

I believe in one race Radio 5 Live commentator David Croft dubbed him the "Leeroy Jenkins" of Formula One. Give him a competitive car and the kid could win races.

The Robert Kubica crash certainly was a shock, and the fact that we are losing one of the top drivers for what looks like a good chunk of the season is a blow to everyone who loves the sport.
However, having seen the horrific pictures of his rally car with the crash-barrier speared right through the center between driver and co-driver, it is a miracle that either or both men were not killed instantly.

The BBC are now reporting that 3 drivers are in the frame to replace Kubica. Reserve driver Bruno Senna, ex-Force India Vitantonio Liuzzi, And the very experienced Nick Heidfeld. They say Heidfeld has been contacted by Renault, and of the three, Quick Nick would be the safest bet, although I would like to see Senna get another shot.

Anyway, wishing Robert a swift and full recovery, and hope to see him back in F1 before too long.

Strange but very pretty

I'll be interested to see how Senna does in a better car.

My memory doesn't serve me with specifics, but I remember being more impressed with Chandhok & Yamamoto than Senna, and Klein actually shamed the whole lot of them with his single qualifying performance.

Indeed. I was annoyed with the way Chandhok was treated last season. Never turned a wheel in the car before Bahrain, yet was very quickly equaling Senna, then dumped for a pay-driver. I do believe both he and Senna deserve one more real shot at F1 with a better car than the HRT. If when the get their shot they fail, then they can ride off to America or sportscars, but these days it seems you have to be Hamilton fast from your first session or you are for the chop.

A friend and I were discussing pro athletes who endanger the careers they are so fortunate to have with dangerous off-season activities. The next day, Kubica crashes.
I wish F1 cars weren't SO FUGLY. We're talking IRL fugly here with that giant front wing and tiny rear wing. God, I really miss early '90's and early '00's cars.
I hope Reubens can do a Gerhard Berger and get a couple of end-of-career wins to bring Williams back. Long shot, I know.
If the car is up to it, Schumi will steal a win this year.
My bold prediction: Red Bull blew it all last year. They won't be able to keep up that kind of momentum and will be disappointingly off-pace this year. It happens to some teams. Look at Brawn/Mercedes.
Can't wait for my favorite Sunday AM programming to return.

I have been a fan of f1 for a while and have to saty kubica crash was big,he is lucky to be alive,i reckon heidfeld will get the lotus renault drive, luzzzi is an ok driver but he isnt a vettel, button type of drivers,he still make errors and crashes still.i think redbull will be the team to be beat again.

Well, due to the political situation in their country, the Bahrain GP has been called off:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/9402871.stm

The Bahrain Grand Prix has been called off because of anti-government protests in the Gulf kingdom.

The race, due to be staged on 13 March, would have opened the new season but had been in doubt for more than a week because of the civil unrest.

Instead, the 2011 campaign will begin in Australia on 27 March.

"We must focus on immediate issues of national interest and leave the hosting to a later date," said Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa.

"After the events of the past week, our nation's priority is on overcoming tragedy, healing divisions and rediscovering the fabric that draws this country together; reminding the world of the very best that Bahrain is capable of as a nation once again united."

The race could still be rescheduled as the FIA, F1's world governing body, confirmed the postponement in a statement.

Given how exciting last year's race was, I'm not particularly fussed, really. But we'll see if they can fit it back into what is already a crowded 20-race calendar.

Watching the pre-race chat and stuff now.

It's too fucking early after a saturday night- can't Australia keep decent hours?

LOL. We get most European races on Sunday nights around 10pm, plus it's better for you guys now (then earlier). Previous years it was a start time of 3pm, due to start in 20 minutes.

And go Webber!

I only went and forgot about the bloody clocks going forward and missed the first half hour of the race, didn't I? GUH!
