News Forbes: "Mary Wiseman is Killying it on Star Trek Discovery"

Not everybody in Star Trek has to be Super Fit and thin.

Even Scotty got a beer belly as he got older.

Uhura got a bit chunkier as she grew older.

Kirk got chunkier as well as he grew older.

The important part is how you handle your job.

Unless your job is to be Security/Tactical/MACO/'Spec Ops equivalent', and needing to be in Best possible physical shape; then the mental capabilities generally should matter more.

And Tilly was barely a ensign until very recently where she got assigned to acting First Officer duties.

Even then, being the XO is more of a mangerial job and doesn't necessarilly need to be in the best possible shape unless you expect her to do hand to hand combat all the time.

But even then, that's what phasers are for and having extra security staff.

It makes me really sad that Mary has been exposed to cruel and utterly unnecessary comments about her online. Heck, some fool even started a thread on here about her appearance. I always thought Trek fans were meant to be more tolerant, kinder and less judgemental, but nah, we can be a pretty bad bunch (especially when it comes to anything Discovery in many cases). I utterly love Mary on the show, and think she’s beautiful exactly as she is.

No there are as many, if not more, assholes as there are anywhere else.

Mary Wiseman is an absolute treasure

It's great that we finally got to see Killy!

I agree. One time, shortly after I came back to TrekBBS three years ago, I saw an episode thread where they went on about a wart or whatever it was that Mary Wiseman had and they went on about it for pages and pages and pages.

Another time, I don't remember exactly when but sometime when Bush was President, I said that some of these people are in a competition to see who can be more unlikable. And they're all "winners".

What's worse is that the comments are mainly from fat neckbeards who would have zero chance with an attractive woman like wiseman. These people basically want to see their waifu pillows on screen. But what more can you expect from a group of people who also don't like seeing a flawed, outspoken black woman in the lead. Misogyny is alive and well in trek fandom.

I still remember when I rage-joined this site back in Season 1 during one of the Mirror Universe episode discussions where some people who were otherwise throwing a tantrum about [insert bogeyman here] taking away the "iconic" Mirror Universe uniforms from the ladies actually stopped to express gratitude that at least they didn't have to see Mary Wiseman wearing them, and of course the other usual nice things these types of people can say about a woman's looks, after weeks of enduring these types of rants from some colleagues of mine IRL. Naturally, I was very happy to see the unwavering support she received from the fans in the linked twitter chain; it's good to be reminded from time to time that the loud, edgy, basement-dwelling fanboys are far from the majority of Star Trek's audience.

I've always found her gorgeous, there's no point in denying that. But that's not why I started liking her from her very first appearance. Tilly is like a ray of sunshine that brightens every room she steps into, and has an honest emotionality that convinced me I should strive to be more like her after more than a decade of looking up to TNG's emotionally stunted pseudo-stoicism as a standard. Wiseman was the perfect choice for this role and I'm very glad she's become a member of the Star Trek family.

It was a mole. Coincidently she had it removed between Seasons 1 and 2.

I am glad that Mary Wiseman is getting this support, she is a great character, she is beautiful and she is funny as all get out. I guess I have been lucky as I have not seen any attacks on her for her body - I wish that crap wasn't happening - it shouldn't be. She is a favorite and you can tell that she is a beautiful soul in real life.

Misogyny is alive and well in trek fandom.

Sadly I have to agree, and it's been that way for far too long. I remember being a kid and hearing what were in retrospect some really disgusting things said about Captain Janeway, things that I ended up parroting myself as a naive kid.

There was another less well-thought out thread akin to this (now thankfully closed) that asked if MW was either “pregnant” or “unwell” this season. Out of a fit of disgust, I responded thusly:
Having been to countless Trek conventions since 1983, I can safely say without equivocation that around 70-80% of the fandom (maybe more) appear to look “overweight” or “unwell”, myself included. My only saving grace is that I happen to be 6’5” tall with a thankfully large frame and I don’t necessarily appear to be terribly overweight. However, by most medical and/or mathematical standards, I am. Finding shoes that will fit my 14-wide feet is a bitch too. I honestly don’t think anyone on this BBS should be casting stones about anyone else’s appearance.
It honestly mystifies me how anyone in the fandom would tread upon such flimsy ground. It’s worse than misogyny, it’s a complete lack of self-image awareness, stemming both from a peculiar kind of denial and baseless arrogance that such bottom-dwellers would apply to anyone else they thought was “imperfect”.

What's worse is that the comments are mainly from fat neckbeards...

>Thread about how Mary Wiseman is awesome despite idiots online mocking her appearance
>Someone jumps in ridiculing the hypothetical appearance of the idiots online.

C'mon, man. You're better than this. We're better than this. "Fat" people are not problematic. "Neckbeard" is just a hairstyle.

I know you have a lot of likes, and I appreciate the sentiment, but this one line seems so hypocritical and tone-deaf in hindsight. There are plenty of fat neckbeards praising Wiseman. There are skinny clean-shaven folks denigrating her. And everything in-between.

Sigh.
