FLASH GORDON (1954, Steve Holland)

Recently I've been watching episodes of the 1954 Flash Gordon TV series starring Steve Holland. It's surprisingly enjoyable. I prefer the 1930s serials starring Buster Crabbe, as well as the first season of Filmation's animated series, in part because they are more faithful to the original concept, but this show is at least as fun as the other '50s sci-fi shows that I've sampled: Space Patrol, Rocky Jones, Space Ranger, etc.

Has anyone else here watched the '50s Flash Gordon?

I have a few of the eps. on DVD. It was enjoyable enough for what it was, but not a particularly memorable show.

I saw a couple of episodes a long time ago. My memory is not too clear, but I remember being not too impressed with the actors, but impressed with some social commentary that seemed ahead of its time-- but, again, the details escape me. The comparison to Rocky Jones is apt, but I like the actors in Rocky Jones better. Like you, though, I prefer the Buster Crabbe serials.

Wow - I didn't even know they did an FG series in the 1950ies. As a kid growing up in the late 1960ies, early 1970ies; a local UHF station was repeating the 1930ies Buster Crabbe, Flash Gordon serials for years.

I would like to purchase a single DVD set with all available episodes of the '50s series. Most DVD releases contain a small number of episodes, and many of the releases have overlapping episodes.
