First LEGAL torrent in North America

While it may be the first time a network has decided to distribute a show this way, it certainly is not the first torrent ever that does not infringe on a copyright ;)

However, this does expose an obvious issue... torrents are becoming a more popular way to distribute content because the distributor no longer has to worry about centralized bandwidth (for instance, Blizzard releases WoW patches this way). But at the same time, ISP's are currently trying to restrict torrent traffic as much as they can, as well as try and cap the amount that people can download in a month. It runs totally contrary to the emerging popularity of digital distribution channels and if anything is going to keep it from becoming a dominant path to distribution, it's going to be the ISPs.

Canadian ISPs are worse than American ISPs, if you can believe it. I laugh at people who think we're moving towards downloads for video distribution. Maybe if Korea invades Canada and takes over.

I have no problem with "illegal" torrents, mainly because everything I download is not on DVD, which to me makes it legal. I downloaded the Star Wars Holiday special for my grandma, I downloaded Boston Legal because because they don't have episodes on their website! I have downloaded pilots of TV shows that were never picked up.

However what is on CBS? CSI? No thanks. There isn't a singal show I can think of I ever watched on CBS besides Still Standing (which is from CBS but I watch it on Lifetime) and The Price is Right!

Yup. You can't even escape Bell's idiocy if you go 3rd party. Right now, I'm under their old plan of unlimited throughput... I imagine they'll catch me eventually, but I'm not touching my account at all until then. I figure they'll force 3rd parties to go with throughput limiting as well.
Only in Canada would companies try to stop internet growth. I have a fucking idea... LAY MORE FIBER. Ugh.
You know what's stupid? Both companies offer an 18 meg option yet both companies limit it to 60-100 GB transfer per month. Why would pay more to hit your cap faster? Bah.
Honesly, I wish I could pay a couple of hundred bucks a motnh for a T1 and just have ISPs leave me alone.

It's CBC, not CBS. ;)
Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

There are plenty of legal torrents at http://www.legaltorrents.com/. Great for some Ed wood movies. Not all torrents are illegal, they save money on bandwidth and great if you're looking for some older versions of freeware software.

The sparse population density in Canada makes this a very unattractive undertaking. There is simply no financial incentive unless the government gets involved.

Keep dreaming. The local company here (MTS Allstream) can't even be bothered to extend existing high-speed internet or cellphone service to some rural areas, let alone upgrading the network.

I work for a Telco and our greatest fear is that the cableco are going to come in with DOCSIS 3.0 and kill us with their speed. My point is what's the point. If all we are going to throtle the speeds who the hell gives a shit. If I have a 125Mbps or 3Mbps. I'm still only going to be dling at 3Kbps.

At least fix the urban areas though. God, this is why I kind of wish Bell was still publically owned. At least the government could subsidize it and it'd get done. At this rate, we'll be back to 10 gigs a month like we were 5 years ago.

The fact that the CBC, of all people, got hit by this is just amusing as hell.

Telus ran the fiber out to my community 3 years ago. I watched them bury the cable as I drove the 1.5 hours to Calgary every two weeks at that time.

Good. CBS just cancelled their only show worth watching so who the hell bothers to download their crap anyway?

I work for Telus and our VP said that the reason why they don't go out and lay fiber everywhere is simply because after 15 years from now the Telcos are just going to have to share their lines all over again. Sort of like how the telephones services now are opened up.

That being said I am surprised the concepts of net neutrality has not become more of a hot button topic.
