First Contact scene - with Sisko over Picard?

indolover

Fleet Captain
Worf said, in response to Picard calling him a coward, he would kill him if he were any other man.

So, if Sisko, said it to him, would he have killed him? lol.. Whilst Picard outranks Worf (and were long time friends/comrades), Sisko was Worf's effective CO at the time. I often wonder if:

Worf: With all due respect, sir, you are allowing your experience with the Prophets to influence your judgment!
Sisko: You're afraid. You want to blow up the ship and run away, you coward!
Dax: Benjamin!
Worf: (slashes Sisko with his mek'leth)

I often feel that the writers/producers of FC and Insurrection didn't think well of DS9, and didn't really take things like that into account. The little gib of Picard at that he didn't know how they did things on DS9 but that people report for duty on time on Enterprise always sounded low to me (Insurrection). Not to mention the fact that the producers were originally planning on blowing up the Defiant in FC.

So yeah, I can imagine it going like this:

"So, he then says he would kill Picard if he were any other man, indicating he respects no one as much as Picard"
"But what about Sisko?"
"Who?"
"Worf's CO on DS9"
"Oh, right..... Ah, who cares about that little show anyway...."

I bet there would be half a dozen or so who could say that to Worf's face and he wouldn't kill them. I doubt he would kill any of the senior staff of the Enterprise or DS9. Picard pissed him off and Worf bit back, I wouldn't take it terribly seriously.

Sisko intimidates Worf.

Ron Moore wrote FC, so I think they were well respectful of DS9.

And Micheal Piller (you know, one of the CREATORS of DS9 and the guy who got Ira Behr to take over as his successor?) wrote INS.

Sisko likely would have been the only "other man" Worf wouldn't dare to kill if he called him a coward. He can definitely hold his own against Klingons, particularly in "Invasive Procedures", and as Worf saw in "The Way of the Warrior". And Sisko chewed out Worf pretty good after he nearly killed Kurn. Then there was "Apocalypse Rising" when Sisko gets to portray a Klingon and goes overboard in his test by decking Worf to the point where it seemed like he was giving him a challenge to the death. So if the two ever did come to actual blows, it's more likely Sisko would have killed Worf.

^ Exactly. Worf's anger simply got the best of him and he said what was first on his mind.

Besides, it would have sounded silly if he said "If you were any other man, I would kill you where you stand! Excepting, of course, Captain Sisko."

And that's what the writers were probably thinking - they wanted a line that sounded badass. Probably not much more thought went into it.

What really would have been interesting is if, instead of Worf, Sisko had been in command of the Defiant and had been rescued by Picard's ship.

This would have resulted in interaction between Sisko and the man Sisko held responsible for his wife's death.

.

He stopped blaming Picard for that back in "Emissary" and felt lousy over the way he treated Picard.

Sisko instead of Worf would have been awesome.

Imagine how badass it'd be if Sisko and Picard went out to get revenge against the Borg.

I think what happened is that when doing First Contact, they thought of Worf as belonging to the TNG crew. The Defiant has nothing to do with DS9, or Sisko -- it's just a way of having Worf show up.

Besides, I think Sisko would have gone down to Engineering and punched the Queen's head right off. The drones would be too intimidated to attack him.

No, one of them would've wound up playing second fiddle to the other one. Worf was a member of the TNG crew before he went to DS9 so they found a way to reunite him with his old crew.

I often feel that the writers/producers of FC and Insurrection didn't think well of DS9, and didn't really take things like that into account.
This has been pointed out already, but I think it is worth repeating. First Contact was co-written by Ronald D. Moore, who was one of the top writers/producers on DS9 and was extremely devoted to that show. Insurrection was written by Michael Piller who co-created DS9 and was its showrunner during its first three years. I don't think there were any negative feelings toward DS9 on the part of the people who wrote those movies.

Now, the statement that they "didn't really take things like that into account" may be true to a degree. But that's to be expected. Aside from explaining why Worf is on the Enterprise, there's really no reason for a stand-alone TNG movie, one that's going to be seen by a much wider audience than any of the Trek TV series, to reference DS9. And, as has been mentioned, it would have just sounded clunky for Worf to say something like "If you were not yourself or Captain Sisko I would kill you where you stand."

It's sort of the same thing as when Sisko gets promoted to captain in "The Adversary" and O'Brien comments that he is the best captain in Starfleet. Was O'Brien, who had served aboard the Enterprise, meaning to slight Captain Picard? Were the writers? I don't think so. It's just a nice thing to say, and less awkward than "Here's to one of the best captains in Starfleet, a distinction which also belongs equally to Captain Picard."

Yeah it's better than Worf saying.

"If you were any other man other than yourself and 22 other friends. I would kill you where you stand."

After way too much Star Trek and about the right amount of beer over a weekend, my friend and I had a giggle fit thinking about this scene, because he also said the same thing about Benjamin Maxwell of the Phoenix. So we came up with this bit of drunken dialogue to rationalize it.

"Captain Sisko is the finest captain I've ever served under."

"Hey, Chief, what about Captain Picard?"

"Oh, right. The finest STARSHIP COMMANDER I've ever served under, and Captain Sisko is the best space-station-with-a-starship-assigned-to-it-captain I've ever known."

"Oh. OK, Chief. Where does Ben Maxwell come in?"

"Sigh. OK. Ben Maxwell is the finest starship captain who retired after having a nervous breakdown. Picard is the finest captain still commanding a starship. Sisko is the finest captain of a Bajoran space station. Are we clear?"

Go drink 14 beers and then read it. Believe me, it gets better.

"If you were any other man, except Captain Sisko, or Chief O'Brian, or Commander Riker, or Geordi, I went to the Academy with that guy, he throws a great kegger. Or Data, though I'm not sure if he qualifies as a man. Tasha and I were close, but I never asked her that. Boundaries, you know. Or Doctor Bashir, I guess. I'd have to work him over a little though. Or Quark, he gives me prune juice on the house. Also Odo. I kinda like him, but don't tell him I said so. What was I saying? Oh right, I would kill you where you stand!"

Doesn't have quite the same dramatic impact, does it?
