Fear Her removed from iPlayer

The 2006 episode Fear Her has been removed from BBC iPlayer because it features a small speaking role by the BBC newsreader Huw Edwards, who recently pleaded guilty on three counts of accessing indecent images of children.

I can't help but think it's ironic that this is happening just as another summer Olympiad is taking place, which would logically be the best time to be rerunning an episode like this (even if it was never much liked anyway).

I saw on Twitter that the BBC is also unlikely to ever show again, or let any other broadcaster air, the historic footage of Edwards announcing the death of Queen Elizabeth II to the country (and world, really). I absolutely understand the reasons for this position, but it’s also kind of incredible that such an iconic moment, the sort of clip you’d have expected to be shown over and over again in nostalgia or history shows, will not be seen again.

On the plus side it's Fear Her, one of the few episodes people might actually want to disappear forever!

I've read that they're going to get it redubbed and then put it back up, so it won't be gone for long. And yeah, it's still there in its original form on the discs... the ones that have been produced already anyway. Dunno what will happen in the future.

It's lucky for the episode that Edwards only had a brief voiceover role which is easy to edit out, in contrast to the too-big-to-censor roles of Barrowman, Clarke and Langley.

Comparisons are also being made to The Thick Of It, where Chris Langham was unceremoniously dropped from the series but not retroactively erased.
That series is also being highlighted for containing a joke about "the Huw Edwards rumour" (and another similar joke about Philip Schofield).

Not a good week for Tennant all round. Anyone see those photos of the teenager who murdered those kids dressed in 10 cosplay standing in front of a Police Box?

Makes my decision to ditch all Uk terrerstrial Tv back in 2014 by tearing out my aerial even more valid, as if we did not have enough of decades of this being revealed since 2014, and now today in 2024 at the BBC it is still going on by highly paid BBC staff..........just stunning to levels i cannot fathom, and then we have a ex BBC chairwoman calling him "poor Hue" and how the "media were out to get him", and even "thanked him for all his service".......are these people living on the same planet as the rest of us.

They weren't just photos, he was in a support video for Children In Need, which the Beeb has ALSO pulled from its platforms.

Imagine going from someone who dresses as the Doctor to a child killer.

(Don't mention the Racnoss).

BBC, SKY, and Deadline running with the story. This is a disaster

Doctor Who really needs to get away from the BBC I feel, even Russel's been on record stating the battle to preserve the Beeb is a feeble one, hence why the Disney+ partnership was struck...but of course the press are all saying that's not even certain any longer. The grifters really have a disdain for the BBC

Imagine how many old films you'd have to tear apart if you were to follow through on this?

Ferris Bueller would have to lose all the scenes featuring Jeffrey Jones (and Tim Burton's filmography would be decimated)

We could never watch Star Trek the Motion Picture again.

In this instance it's a relatively easy fix and no one is going to miss Edwards. As with a lot of genuine newsreaders in films/TV I suspect at some point the current audience watching probably imagines they're actors anyway, which is why it's silly to use actual presenters (not to mention dangerous by blurring the lines between truth and fiction)

Not that I'm trying to trivialize the seriousness of sexual crimes, but it is interesting how society tends to shun actors and work they've done as soon as we learn they're sexual deviants, yet nobody raises a fuss over actors who commit other serious crimes. For example, someone who once guest starred on DS9 is currently serving a prison sentence for murder, yet you don't see any cries of "remove that episode from syndication/streaming" the way you do when an actor is revealed to be a rapist or pedophile or guilty of some other form of sexual misconduct.

Matthew Broderick killed two women in a car accident in Ireland some years ago. Forgot what side of the road he was on and ploughed into their car. At the time, you could only be convicted of either careless driving or of dangerous driving causing death - an offence of causing death by careless driving only was introduced years later. He was convicted of simple careless driving and got away with a fine.

I think it’s very different from people like jones or Edwards who set out to cause harm, but there is a fair amount of antipathy to Broderick online, perhaps because he was viewed as getting off so lightly (even though he was seriously injured himself).

God I'd forgotten about that!

The Robert Banks Stewart estate are notoriously greedy; just ask the folks at Big Finish. Though unlike the Steff Coburn situation it's purely about the money, so if the Beeb cough up the cash they'll come back.
