Apparently, Disney had no animal sidekicks prior to the 90s. Shame-I would have voted for Thumper or the mice in Cinderella.

One speeking sidekick which has always stuck in my head from when I was a wee boy is Achimedes, Merlin's owl from The Sword in the Stone.
