Fan Fiction by Brent Spiner

I've been hoping to check this out eventually, it sounds really fun.
For those unaware it follows a fictionalized Brent Spiner in 1991, who is trying to figure out who sent him a "mysterious package" and "disturbing letters". It also has fictionalized versions of the rest of the TNG cast members and Gene Roddenberry as supporting characters.
They have an audio book that Spiner narrator, and features the rest of the TNG cast voicing their own dialogue.

The audiobook’s on scribd, but there’s no text copy yet. Hopefully that’ll be up soon.

The audiobook...

"Fan Fiction: A Mem-Noir: Inspired by True Events" by Brent Spiner with Jeanne Darst, read by Brent Spiner, Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, LeVar Burton, Marina Sirtis, Michael Dorn and Genie Francis, McMillan Audio, 2021, 630 min.

I'm super excited to read this! I bought the ebook off Kobo. But the audio book sounds REALLY special, and I'd like to get that too.

This will be the first time I've engaged with an audio book since the days of audio cassette tapes. Can anyone recommend a legitimate licensed seller that will provide a DRM-free copy?

This question also came up in the No Man's Land thread. @Steve Roby mentioned that Google Play sells DRM-free audiobooks, without requiring a subscription, but the sound quality isn't that great. @ATimson indicated that Downpour also sells DRM-free audiobooks, but I don't know about the subscription aspect... the way the post is written sounds like it might be required, but I'm not sure.

Downpour doesn't require a subscription, but it's usually significantly cheaper to subscribe for a month, buy the book with the free credit you get, and then cancel. (You keep the book after you cancel.)

Downpour and Google Play have similar quality M4B files. Downpour also offers MP3s, though the M4B files are usually better quality. (No Man's Land is an exception to this, for some reason - the MP3s were the higher quality version. Still not up to Steve's standards, though.)

Libro.fm has a similar setup to Downpour, though Downpour's subscription is cheaper, and you can only download MP3s (at about the same quality as Downpour's MP3s).

I will look into this and report back.

By any chance, has anyone noted the availability of the audiobook on CD? That would solve the use case as well as please my shelf.

"We're sorry but due to the Publisher’s copyright restrictions this audiobook cannot be sold within 'Australia'."

Drat.

I am just quoting what I was sent. It would be an auto-generated message where the region affected would be added in.
True :) But speaking as someone who makes internets for a living, that kind of auto substitution can be done without leaving quotes.

In reference to your Australia problem though, have you considered looking into a VPN? It would let you connect to audiobook retailer websites from another country, so you could bypass the retail region locking and purchase the audiobooks that way.

...So I did some research, and in the end just purchased the eBook from Google Play Books Audiobooks because Google Play is a vendor I'm familiar with and already have an account, and because I read they have a download option, and some reddit threads told me I could get export to mp3 with the bitrate at 64kbps, and the sample rate 41kHz.

I'm very disappointed, because I didn't get that. I got one single DRM-free "m4a" file, 64kbps, but only 32kHz. And there are no chapter marks or cover image in the metadata. None of this was transparent before making the purchase.

Luckily my partner and I are planning to listen together, basically in one sitting.

I don't think I'll be buying from them again.

I am assuming it is a tactic to encourage other regions to purchase the rights separately, in the knowledge that the market is protected? I assumed it would be on McMillan Audio Australia, but nope. And least not yet. (The book itself is available locally. I think mine was an earlier US import.)

McMillan Audio, 2021, 630 min.

The cast list is more complete now: read by Brent Spiner, Jeanne Darst, Barrie Kreinik, Gates McFadden, Genie Francis, Hallie Todd, Jonathan Frakes, LeVar Burton, Marina Sirtis, Matie Argiropoulos, Matt Godfrey, Michael Dorn, Patrick Stewart, Saskia Maarleveld and Sean Patrick Hopkins.

Running time adjusted to 413 min.?

No, I'm not Australian, I'm in Canada and I bought it in Canada. My experience with Google Play is not related to your Australia problem. I just bought from the wrong company by mistake.

Coming late to the party: I finally read this last night and really enjoyed it. Read the whole book in one evening.

And, of course, I am now consumed with curiosity regarding just how it's "inspired by true events." :)

(Question: is there an actual review thread somewhere? Since most of the posts above seem to be about technical issues regarding the audio version.)
