family nicknames--what are yours?

I was called "Boo" for some reason--not from To Kill a Mockingbird, though.

Hubby's family thrives on nicknames--no one is called by their real name.

Their Mom is called, if not "my Mom" then "Ama" (Spanish) or "Mama-san" (because they're all into Japanese animation, not anime). Their Dad is "Pops."

Hubby is usually called "Fonso" from his middle name, Alfonso--or "Fartso," for reasons I don't need to explain, or "Rapunzel" to sorta rhyme with Alfonso and to make fun of him losing his hair a bit.

One brother is called "Meh," another is called "Sachi," and yet another is called "Minsky."

Strange names, but all meant well.

One brother is called “Meh,” another is called “Sachi,” and yet another is called “Minsky.”
That's cute. Any Grouchos or Harpos?

No nicknames in my family, although my mother sometimes used to call my father, whose name is Bruce, “Bru” or pronounce it as mock-Italian, “Broo-chay.”

My boss's wife is named Dianne, and her family often calls her “Dee Dee.”

My family are generous and creative with nicknames. At least the evolution of my many nicknames is evident. The most reasonable is HB (I'm Hannah Beth), but even that has evolved to something else: HB MacGee. There are also Hanny, Hannah Banana, Hannah Banana Baneena Banoo, Hannimal, Hannalina Ballerina, Nanna, Nanners, Nanny, Nanny Goat, Goatie, Goat(ie) Girl, Bethy, Bethy-lou...

My sister's nickname is Flo, but her name's not Florence. Her name is Laurie, but it evolved to Florence Bolivia Beatrice Brown -- no one ever calls her Laurie.

I'm the family patriarch so I assign the nicknames, sort of like Bluto (John Belushi) assigning pledge names in Animal House.

Mine, of course, is forever lost in history, never to be heard again.

. . . Hanny, Hannah Banana, Hannah Banana Baneena Banoo, Hannimal, Hannalina Ballerina, Nanna, Nanners, Nanny, Nanny Goat, Goatie, Goat(ie) Girl, Bethy, Bethy-lou....
Hannah Banana? Sounds like the latest Disney teen heroine. And Hannalina Ballerina sounds like a children's song.

My family does have a nick name for me...I don't know if it's just that they think three syllables is too much to say for a name but my close family tend to call me Al rather than Alicia. It's silly really...but I've never liked it much, sounds too much like a guy's name or that stupid 80s song.

The other nickname my Dad uses for me sometimes is AB...usually only in e-mails or in writing, though. That nickname might make sense if my middle name started with a B, but it doesn't. It comes from "ali babba" or something like that but I'm not sure where my Dad came up with that, as far as I know I've never been 'Ali'. At least he doesn't usually say it out loud.

My sister is almost always called Jessi or Jess rather than Jessica by the family, I guess it sounds less harsh, I dunno. My dad goes by Bill rather than William, but that's not that uncommon. My Grandma and aunt still jokingly call him Billy at times (and he's labeled as such on some of the pictures of him as a kid, it's kinda funny).

'the lad' or 'the boy' by parents (even though am now 32) or sometimes 'sunshine'. usually they just stick with my name.

i used to get called 'Scott of the Antarctic' by a family friend as a kid, because of my first name...

Does a shortened first name count?

I was called "Brillo Pad" for a few months. Most of my nicknames had comes from my friends:

BD, Skillet, Snoogans... stuff like that.

Libby was mine. Apparently, Libby's brand Spaghetti-O's were a favorite of mine as a child. :shifty:

I have a great uncle named William Edward, but we call him Billy Ed.... my great-grandmother was called "Aunt Sister" by a lot of her nieces and nephews. She was the second oldest of a family of 12, so names got confusing.

Apart from 'baby names' (given to in 'child-speek' or by a child) we really haven't had a lot of those in my family.

There's one exception though; my great grand parents, Valborg and Valdemar, became the 'Valde-parents' because they were parents, grand parents and great grand parents -and that was quite confusing to me as a child so I coined the phrase -and eventually the whole family used it :)

The only one in my family with a nickname is my sister Amanda, Dad calls her "Zap" sometimes.

Amanda -> Manda-Panda -> Zapanda -> Zap

He anticipates that in the next five years it'll be shortened to "P" (spitting sound).

used to be called "obi wan knobi" and "michelin" becouse my other surname means wheelmaker (old horse carriages) back in elementary school. i've got nothing special otherwise. i usually go by johnny nowadays which is an "americanization" of my given name.

EDIT: i case one of my middle eastern friends want to annoy me the call me abu johnny. i bloody hate it...

My dad sometimes calls me Chels (short for Chelsea, which is my name) and my cousin is likewise sometimes referred to, lazily, as Whit (short for Whitney). Beyond that, there are no nicknames in my family.

I do, however, have a variety of surprisingly pervasive nicknames deriving from a 1993 high school incident involving a drunken viewing of Menace 2 Society. :vulcan:

My mom's side of the family calls me Durango. I have no idea why. It started when I was about 2 so I suspect it's probably embarassing. So I never asked.

Most nicknames in my family were fairly obvious, like diminutives. However, I had a brother who was often referred to as "Wart," as in Arthur before he became King.

Monster

here is my number plate.

And the answers Yes.

Why I'm not surprised? :p

We don't have any peculiar nicknames around family, but we use diminutives: my father is Toni, my mother is Ninì. I just use a short form of my name.
