Ex Machina Finale Discussion (Spoilers)

Well all good things must come to an end and this week it is no different with Brian K. Vaughan's excellent political superhero opus concluding after fifty issues. I've been a big fan of this since it first came out and am looking forward to seeing Mitchell Hundred's final adventure. Any other "Ex Machina" fans out there? I understand as well that there was an attempt or is an ongoing attempt to adapt this but haven't heard much progress and is stuck in development hell.

Didn't realize the last issue was hitting this week, but now I'm very anxious to get to Wednesday to see how it ends.

Will miss this book a great deal. It's the only title I've been reading consistently the last few years.

Huh, I bought the first five trades but never got around to reading them. Maybe I'll see if I can catch up before the end of the month.

My library has been pretty up to date with the "Ex Machina" trades surprisingly I'm caught up to the most recent trade which I believe was volume nine.

Thanks for sharing the link. Very interesting interview. Especially the comment about how the series was almost cancelled after the first issue. I'm glad it didn't happen, but i can understand (I think) how it might have. I recall showing issue #1 to a friend when it was first out. He was cruising through the book with some enthusiasm until he got to those last two pages. Then he was offended that they had the nerve to have a comic book character "disrespecting" what had happened on 9/11. I was very suprised by this reaction. But i think I see where he was coming from even if i disagree.

Think I am going to sit down this weekend and begin to re-read the whole series from issue #1.

I've still yet to read the issue but the comic's wikipedia article has been updated with the timeline section which contains what happened in the final issue...
Bradbury reveals that he has always been in love with Mitchell to which Mitch is stunned and pushes him away, Bradbury punches him furious and walks away. This is after Bradbury has spent a year in prison having taken the fall for the Mayor when he donned the costume of the Great Machine to battle Suzanne. Martha Hundred is killed. Mitch is named Ambassador to the United Nations and declares his final act as Mayor is to rebuild the Twin Towers to announce to the world that New York is back! Kremlin is killed after Mitch uses his powers to turn the gun against him after being threatened with the papers that Suzanne had on him. Mitchell says that he can do more good as President. It's revealed that the post 2005 flash forward that Mitch is now Vice President under John McCain who is President of the United States. Obviously implied that McCain was able to beat Obama or Hilary thanks to having the Great Machine on his ticket.

Still need to read the actual issue to fully digest the ending but it would seem like it fits. I'd love this to be adapted into a film which as I stated in my original post seems to be happening but in development hell much like "Y:The Last Man".

I started reading this as it was first coming out, but it sorta fell off my radar around issue 15. Having heard it was ending a couple of months ago, I reread that issue, thinking about continuing from there, but it had been so long, I wasn't familiar with most of the characters. So I spent the last few days reading everything from issue 1, and just finished the finale. Fucking hell. What a way to end things, huh? Loved this shitloads above the tidy wrap-up and time jump of Y-the last man.

I agree. I finally read the issue a couple months ago and it wasn't as bad as some fans were saying. I kind of like the ending. Mitch's world has never been one of 'happy endings' but I think we got the payoff that people wanted and that was to see Mitch become the Great Machine again or become President of the United States which it seems like he was well on the way to doing. I can imagine Mitchell being elected as President in 2012 after McCain serves his term...depending on what happened like Katrina and the recession and how McCain handled things I think there would have been too much pressure within the GOP and from the voting public who want to see the Great Machine as President. It might make for an interesting coda mini-series but this will never happen.

It's funny, before I turned to the page where we see he's McCain's Vice, I was sure the telephone conversation was with Obama - heathcare, a daughter, cover of a comic book. Interesting interview above, btw, and I was surprised to see characters were modeled after actual people. As life-like as everyone looks, I sometimes thought Mitchell in particular didn't have a great range of facial expressions. But part of that is characterization, I guess. The whole robot/machine thing.

Anyway, elaborating a bit more on my impressions. Mitch was always portrayed as willing to sacrifice anything for the good of his city, as seen most vividly in his shunning of romance. It makes sense that his obsession with duty would drive him to take even more drastic measures when faced with global responsibilities, to the point of severing ties with, even killing old friends. And the possibility that he intentionally stole the election makes one wonder whether he ever was as good as we thought. I still think the dreams manipulated him into creating things that serve the enemies' purpose, while lying to him about their actual function. This also happened with the portal, which Hundred said worked as a ray gun while he was testing it out.

About him still being a bachelor at the end, was there ever a president elect who wasn't married? The question remained somewhat open on whether he's gay, so that may be figuring in. The biggest question though, is whether the immigrants will ever manage to come through, and whether Mitch will still be at least a shadow of the kind of person who is able/willing to stop them.

It does raise some interesting questions since Mitch seems to have thrown in his lot with the Republicans. I suppose that it makes sense since it was mentioned back few issues that he gave the key note address at their convention. McCain must have really wooed him to his side, maybe the decorated war veteran got to the burgeoning superhero. I could see an issue where it was just the two of them talking in Mitch's office or something and McCain laying thick the call of duty on Mitchell. Not to mention the lure of having a genuine superhero on your ticket sure as hell beats out Sarah Palin or whoever he would have chosen in 2004.

I too think the phone conversation was meant to imply that he was talking with (not necessarily Obama) but Clinton or someone from the Democrats. Michell's policies though were kind of non-partisian if you think about it though. It's the only reason I'm surprised he ended up with McCain.

Personally I think Mitch had the hots for Journal and when she was killed that was the last straw for him. It's not a question of him being gay or straight, after that happened he just shut down that part of him. There was no room for personal entanglements in his life because of the public position he held. That's my take on his sexuality.

Hrrrrnn I just finished reading Ex Machina and I think it may be the best comic I ever read.

Though personally I think that if Mitch was going to love anybody, it was going to be Bradbury - he's just way too good at denial. And wouldn't have risked admitting anything to himself if there was the slightest risk that Bradbury didn't mean it. >.>

Anyway having probably ostracized myself thoroughly, any other Ex Mach fans want to chat/hang out/whatever? The profile this thing has on the internet is like-- nonexistent. Makes me very sad. D:

Wow. I'd say some of our commenters here have been down in a hatch pressing buttons for waaaaay too long. Or maybe that's where they SHOULD be. Good luck with that whole "aliens from outer space" and "phony Obama" thing, UFO guy.

I just finished re-reading the final arc trade again and wow...it's so dark and depressing but I think that is one of the points that Vaughn is trying to make in the story. He's like Joss Whedon in that there aren't always happy endings. Mitch sacrifices his personal life and morale integrity in order to become a career politician. I believe this is a pretty poignant story. I reinforce what I stated earlier about Journal...I believe he did have a thing for her and once she was killed that kind of shut down any desire to have a relationship with anyone. I didn't like how he shunned Bradbury but it makes sense in the context of his character and story. Overall I enjoyed it. I'd love to see an "Ex Machina" movie.
