Ernie Harwell (Tigers broadcaster) Dies

I thought this deserved its own thread rather than get buried in the MLB Talk one.

Ernie Harwell (longtime Tigers broadcaster) dies after a long battle with cancer... :(

So in Ernie's honor I present the quote with which he concluded the first game of all of his Spring Training broadcasts:

For lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; the flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land.

- Song of Solomon 2:11-12

His farewell should be remembered with Lou Gehrig's final appearance at Yankee Stadium. The dignity and eloquence of his final words should be an example to us all.

Shakespeare had the best words for his parting: "He was a man. Take him for all and all, we shall not see his like again."

A huge part of my childhood here in Michigan. Especially my teenage years. I listened to alot of games on the radio during their 1984 winning season. Harwell was just a great announcer. Lived a long life but its sad that as healthy(he worked out into his 90's) as he was it ended with cancer.

I remember seeing a quote from a rural gas station owner who said his hours were 6am until "5 minutes to Ernie". :)

He's quite beloved here. The radio stations had people calling in and I don't think anyone had a bad word to say about the man. Lots of stories about a very patient, classy, loving and giving person.
