EXCLUSIVE: After topping the box office the past two weeks with Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, Universal Pictures, Illumination Entertainment’s Chris Meledandri, and Audrey Geisel will tap the Dr. Seuss library for another classic title, and this one is a surprise. They will begin developing a 3D CG-animated feature based on The Cat in the Hat. Rob Lieber has just been set to write the script. Meledandri will produce and Geisel will be executive producer.

The Mike Myers film was terrible, TCITH should never have even been a live action movie in the first place. Obviously they are doing this because the Lorax was a huge hit, but I don't mind as long as we get a much better movie out of it.

Too bad Chuck Jones ain't around to do it properly, but this'll do. The story is too iconic to be left with the memory of the Mike Meyers film. If you look at the the Meyers film and Jim Carrey's putrid How the Grinch Stole Christmas, then see the success of the CGI version of The Lorax, hopefully there'll be a permanent moratorium on live-action adaptations of Dr. Seuss. Leave it to the animators. Otherwise we run the real and present danger of having to endure the existence of a live-action Green Eggs and Ham starring Adam Sandler.

I really don't see why we need movie adaptations of gradeschool-aged readers anyway. I mean, are we going to see movie adaptations of Dick and Jane or the Bernstein Bears next?

Blah blah blah more generic CG animated films for kids where all the characters have a wonky grin and one permanently raised eyebrow...

Yeah, I'd even like to see them do a remake of the Grinch Who Stole Christmas as a 3D animated movie compared to what we got with Jim Carrey, that's closer to the TV special. There was also Horton Hears a Who from a few years back, though I'm not so sure how successful that was, but it seems to me 3D animation is a better deal for Dr Seuss material.

Personally, I'd rather see them done with some technology like the Muppets or stop-motion animation.

There's also an animated Cat in the Hat tv show with Martin Short providing the voice. My 4 year-old likes it, but she's not the most demanding of critics.
