Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child Novels

This series is one the few mainstream novels I'm into but I absolutely love them. They're completely engrossing page turners!

For those unaware the two authors together write a series of thriller novels usually starring Special Agent Pendergast, a modern day effete Sherlock Holmes. But they also usually write a solo novel each year as well which aren't part of the larger connected continuity. Their early books usually involved monsters or lost creatures, but their more recent works tend to rely on purely human adversaries.

I just finished the most recent book, Lincoln Child's Terminal Freeze. I really enjoyed it! Without going into huge spoilers this is the first book in a long time to have a non-human adversary which I absolutely loved. I missed their more X-Files-esque stories. It was about a team of scientists and documentary filmmakers in Alaska that find a frozen creature in the ice that the Native Americans warn will bring death and fun stuff ensues. I tore through the book in just two days which is really fast for me... every chapter had a great twist on the end and the book created a great sense of dread and tension as always.

Their next combo novel comes out on May 12th. Can't wait!

Are there any other Lincoln/Child fans out there? What books are your favorite? I enjoy all of them, and while I'd say the more recent books are better written, I'm disappointed they never have actual monsters/creatures anymore. I remember reading The Relic back in middle school at night and it scared the crap out of me! Too bad the movie was so... meh. Actually every one of their books is just dying to be made into a movie. They're all so dramatic and fast paced and have such great scenes and stories.

I even enjoy all of the solo author books as well. Everyone of them has something special and unique about them. However I do remember being really pissed off at Tyrannsaur Canyon though, because there were NO dinosaurs in it! I spent the whole book waiting for a T-Rex to be found living in the canyonlands but no! It was just human bad guys! Sigh. I also vaguely recall being disappointed with Death Match but I don't remember a thing about the book.

The only book of theirs I haven't read is Lincoln Child's first book Jennie from way back in 1994. Apparently it's not a thriller at all but just a little character drama.

If I have one common complaint about their books, it's that every single book has the typical hard-headed arrogant asshole authority figure who refuses to believe the hero's crazy theory and throws up unnecessary obstacles. But that's just as much a staple of 24 as well!

Also, for those of you familiar with the Preston/Child books, could you recommend other authors who have a similar style? I'd love to get more of a page turning thriller fix, preferably something with paranormal overtones (but still realistic).

I love Preston/Child. "Relic" and "Reliquary" were pretty great. "Riptide" was good, adventurous fun, too.

Although I haven't read any of his stuff, it seems like James Rollins has something of a similar style.

Yeah I can't pick a favorite but Riptide is definitely up there. I always found the Money Pit to be such a fascination concept, and add in the high tech excavation stuff and the mystery treasure and all... The one thing I'm DYING to see they still haven't done is a sequel to the Ice Limit. The book ends with a huge cliffhanger with the fate of the world in question... and that book came out like eight years ago! They teased me by having the characters cameo in one book planning a return expedition but that's it. Oh and in some of the books it shows characters reading a fictional "Ice Limit III" book. Sigh.

I've read Cabinet of Curiosities and a couple other Pendergast books. Very good stuff-better than most mainsstream mystery books.

I'm glad you started this thread Mr. Light. I was thinking of starting one myself!

I love these books. Brimstone was a personal favorite...

Brimstone slightly disappointed me, I was really hoping for an actual devil :D I dunno that one kinda existed just for the cliffhanger. Not that it's bad mind you, there are no BAD Preston/Child novels. Actually I'm disappointed anytime they do a book with no paranormal/extra-genetic monster.

Relic was a great thriller and absolutely terrifying to read when I was younger... in fact I think that the Museum Beast remains their coolest and creepiest monster out of everything they've done! However reading it nowadays, their writing comes off really juvenile. They've really grown since then. Reliquary was much better written I thought.

I, too, have thoroughly enjoyed a number of the novels written by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child — so much so that I've lost track of the number of their novels lining my bookshelves.

Wheel of Darkness was a bit of a disappointment to me - maybe it was too dark for my tender sensibilities.

I've read and enjoyed some of the standalones - Codex, Tyrannosaur Canyon, The Ice Limit - didnt know they have a series as well.

Wheel of Darkness was another good but not great one. ... All of the Preston/Child books take place in the same continuity, and most of them star Agent Pendergast. The ones without Pendergast introduce characters that end up being supporting characters in the Pendergast novels (like Ice Limit). The ones by just one of the authors aren't part of the greater world as I recall.
