Do you think Picard would have been as popular if they had given him a wig?

I've heard stories about how they considered that option or maybe it was Patrick Stewart who told them he could do it it he had to. I imagine they must have had to consider it because the idea of a older and bald captain was something you know they must not have been expecting or wanting when the show was conceived.

I think he would still be popular but the wig jokes would be through the roof much like they are with Shatner. Not sure if he would have been seen as sexy as some consider him to be. Stewart looks his best without hair and it's one of the things that stand out for him in terms of looks. It would like someone taking the mole off of Cindy Crawford or making John Candy to skinny. Some people have a certain look that people identify with a actor or performer.

Well, it might depend on the hair.
Comb-overs are sooooooo stupid looking.
I saw some of the wigs they were going to use, I can't remember them specifically.

But I think either a full head of hair or what he had was best.
Also whichever season it was when they close cropped it looked better too.

The show was in total rerun before I thought he was hot. Like it was 2008 or something.

Hahaha!!!
Sir Patrick Stewart wore a couple rugs for various storyline purposes, during the series' run and he looked so much better without them! He was even engaged to the actress who played Vash, in Real Life and his baldness did not seem to affect his ability to hit it. Thank Providence that Patrick was proud bald ... that's all I've got to say on it.

OR it could have been a different hat every week for the Captain. Mets cap, cowboy hat, fez, tri-corne, bowler, etc.
Like Yul Brynner, Picard owned his baldness. He should have had a jar of scalp wax on his ready room desk like Mr. Burns. They could have even used his baldness as a plot device, reflecting a particle beam off his head at just the right angle to destroy an attacking Romulan Warbird. ;)

Gene Roddenberry wanted Picard to have a tribble on his head (he hated the idea of baldness), but Robert Justman managed to convince Roddenberry not to force the issue.

Despite the wigs used in the make-up tests, Picard still looks best natural.

And why a cure for baldness in the 24th century when curing stigma makes more sense? Mr. Laser Beam and others said it, baldness is not a bad thing.

I think ever show has had a baldness issue. Picard and I think they had some debate with Picardo and I know that Berman was against Brooks having a shaved head. Discovery with the new Klingons. Even pops up in the movies. The Deltans from TMP and PLummer's Klingon in Trek 6 having a bald head and the young pic of Picard from "Nemesis."

Yes, people with hair are always prettier and smarter ;)
On a serious note, no I am glad they went with a bald Picard

There was one episode when he had a wig on, I can't remember the episode but it was during a flashback scene with Dr. Crusher, it was a flashback to her husbands death when he was in the morg. That wig looked horrible on Stewart. I think the episode was Violations.

If it was a good wig, sure, why not. I can't imagine how him wearing a wig would change anything about the show. All the qualities I admire about Picard have nothing to with his appearance.

That was violations and I agree the hair looked bad but I wonder if that was done for a reason. Maybe they wanted to show he was already starting to go bald. I have seen a pic of him in a upcoming movie were he has hair and it looks good but it also a style that they would never use on TNG.

I've seen video clips of Stewart with hair... and I think he looks far more distinguished without the bulk of it (a little on the sides closely trimmed seem to work best).

I believe this is the wig he used in auditions where he had to play a character with hairs...

I don't know about that. It looks to 80's IMO. It would make his image more dated were as what we got was a timeless look.

Jason.

Thanks, but which is the rug that he said he used in auditions? :)

William Shatner's 'Star Trek' Documentary Reveals How Being Bald Almost Made Patrick Stewart Lose The Job

Roddenberry then reportedly agreed to listen to Stewart read for the role, on the condition that he wear a wig. The actor’s wig was later sent via FedEx from England to Los Angeles. Stewart first read his lines with the wig on and then he was called in to read the lines again, but this time without the wig. After his audition the actor was selected to play Captain Picard in the TV series and Roddenberry addressed all concerns about the actor by saying “hair doesn’t mean anything in the 25th century.”
