Did you like the "GoBots?" Will we ever see a remake or anything new with them?

I got to admit I was a fan of them as a kid. Granted they were no GiJoe or Transformers but I watched every morning while getting ready for school. I even remember most of the names. The had Leader-One,Cyclonus,Chopter,Screwhead and Scooter. The 2 I can't recall was a red car who was a good guy and evil female bad guy who was a black race car who would stomp her foot and cause cracks in the ground. She was kind of a mix between Starscreen and the Baroness from the other cartoons I enjoyed. I think her name was Crusher but not sure about it.

At this point I think we all know the Micheal Bay "Transformer" movies aren't going to get better so why not have someone do something with the "GoBots" and create some competition for people who want to see transforming robots that fight each other?

I vaguely remember the cartoon and had some of the toys way back when (Leader-One, Cy-Kill?, the Space Shuttle, some kind of bike and a couple of car ones for the larger ones. Can't remember with the smaller ones as I had more of those).

I believe hasbro bought out the rights to the fiction side so I don't think they'll be competing with the Transformers films anytime soon.

The Go-Bots sometimes get used in Transformers comics in the last decade or so. Usually as background characters, alternate universe characters, or characters in series set during the long Cybertonian Wars long before the fleeing of the Ark and sometimes even before the rise of Optimus Prime. Lots of them during the rise of Megatron type stories. Gives him lots of bot to kill.

The red hero car was named Turbo.

:whistle::angel:

While GoBots are often seen as inferior to Transformers, I like elements of both universes.

Yeah, I remember Gobots. They used to be considered the second-rate version when Transformers became all the rage in the 80's. I used to have the ambulance, among others like the submarine. Then eventually they became absorbed by what they tried to imitate.

Go-Bots were trash, man! :) I did like that they actually had a guy named Cy-KIll in an 80s cartoon but that's about it.

I collected both Go-Bots and Transformers figures as a child, and, to be perfectly honest, the Go-Bots were cooler on account of the fact that they were made out of metal rather than plastic.

I had more Go-Bots for a while, as they tended to be smaller and thus easier to convince parents to purchase.

It is funny though, Go-Bots aired first, by about ten days. Transformers eventually worked better for story telling.

If I remember, Gobots were simpler and as a 5 year old when Transformers hit in 84, they worked better for me. It didn't last long, Gobots were my "entry drug" into Transformers. By 85-86 I was all about Transformers.

As an aside, from a linguistic viewpoint, does anyone know why we seem to default to using a hyphen ("Go-Bots"), when they just wrote it as a combined word ("Gobots")? As I typed this post, I defaulted to the hyphen, but after looking into it, changed to the compound word before I posted. It's interesting that despite them using it as a compound, we're using it with the hyphen.

The only explanation is that current toys use the hyphenated form. However, from what I've been able to internet-research, in the 80's it was just "Gobots."

The funny part is that in Japan (Machine Robo), only a handful of the monstrous later Gobots were villains. Most of the molds that became Renegades in the West were on the same side as the Guardian molds.

This. The GoBots no longer exist as a counter property.
During the TF:Armada years(mid-00s) Hasbro made Leader-1 a mini-con and paired him with Megatron(irony?).

Not only is that not MY leader 1 it isn't even one MY transformers! I am all about Generation 1 and whatever that 80's GoBots cartoon is called. :)

In G1, Leader-1 was smelted down by Shockwave during the long war. Cy-Kil was killed by Megatron in the Gladiator ring and smelted down later.

Funny enough, I liked the sound effect for the Gobots' transformations better than those of the Transformers. The Gobots just sounded more like heavy, ferrous based machinery than the meager Casio type electronic "grunts" of the more popular property.

I was always waiting to see if someone would make an existential episode of the sries called "Waiting for Gobot".

The Go-Bots franchise had certain elements that were fun to it, like the cooperation with an ACTUAL Earth government instead of sneaking around all the time, inclusion of female characters on both sides, or doing the more space travelly / explorationey episodes long before Transformers moved in that direction. On the other hand, the animation was kitschy compared to G1 Transformers, the episodes usually seemed aimed at younger kids, and I never really liked how toy-accurate the robot designs were... To the point that Leader-1, an F-15, had four tiny wheels sticking out of his jet body even during flight. The Go-Bots never seemed that worried about disguising themselves anyway.

And heck, Frank Welker voiced Scooter in this show while ALSO doing Megatron / Galvatron over on Transformers, while Peter Cullen filled his not-Optimus time doing several characters on this show too. Small robot universes. :)

I liked the gobots. I didn't catch enough of the cartoons, transformers or Gobots, to form a solid opinion, but the toys were just fine and I played with them alongside each other, though I did think of them as distinct species, along with the other cheap imitations that found their way in to my toy box.

I'm not a fan of the current transformers toy range, and would be glad of any competition in the transforming robot market for my own kids.
