Did Picard have an Officer's mess to eat in besides Ten Fwd

Bones1864

Admiral
Did Captain Picard have a private mess hall to eat meals in besides Ten Forward and his private Quarters ? It would make sense for he, Riker, Crusher and Laforge and the other dep't heads to have their own eating area off limits to the rest of the crew.

Meh, they can all eat in their quarters if they don't wanna go to Ten Forward... and there's a replicator in the ready room too.

Re: Did Picard have an Officer's mess to eat in besides Ten

Janeway had a private dining area (before Neelix turned it into his kitchen) so Picard probably did too.

We did see smaller mess areas in Where No One Has Gone Before and some sort of formal / VIP dining area in Haven.

Yes - Captain Picard's private dining room was supposed to be the room they were in when they had dinner with Commander Kurn in Sins of the father according to the script. It was really a redress of the Observation Lounge.

Re: Did Picard have an Officer's mess to eat in besides Ten

Not to mention his Ready Room. Picard was pretty much the only person who could grab a sandwich in his office then head to the bridge to keep an eye on things without having to go very far.

Re: Did Picard have an Officer's mess to eat in besides Ten

Plus, unlike Voyager, most of the Enterprise crew had their own dining areas (except Data).

We saw Dr Bev have breakfast with Jean-Luc; we saw Riker cook for his friends (only Worf liked it though). So maybe it was the space on the USS HotelEnterprise which meant that Picard and senior officers didn't need a Private Mess?

Memory Alpha to the Rescue:
On Galaxy class starships, the captain's mess was on Deck 2. It is equipped with a large buffet-style table. (TNG: "Sins of the Father", "Violations")

The captain's mess was a redress of the observation lounge set. The distinctive windows may suggest a location at the very front of that deck, although they do not perfectly match the windows on the USS Enterprise miniature.

Re: Did Picard have an Officer's mess to eat in besides Ten

I'm pretty sure there was some kind of formal dining room (as others have mentioned). When you think about it we've seen Picard have meals in a wide variety of places. Apparently there's a scene in Insurrection where he's having lunch/dinner in his ready room and drops salad dressing on some of his notes. It reads very amusing and I wish they'd left it in.

Re: Did Picard have an Officer's mess to eat in besides Ten

^ Yep - it was meant to show that he was becoming clumsy because of the effects of the metaphasic radiation. It was in his quarters though.

Re: Did Picard have an Officer's mess to eat in besides Ten

^It's in his quarters? Fair enough. Doesn't Riker make some comment about them being about to enter the "Salad dressing nebula" or something?

Unless Picard didn't have a problem with people snacking at their stations when things were quiet. Then they could just use one of the bridge replicators to get something. On Kirk's bridge, they were always drinking coffee.

Data kinda did too, actually. He eventually got a table and chairs and was going to have dinner with Jenna in his quarters at the end of "In Theory." However, he doesn't really need to eat (and Jenna broke up with him) so it never got much use.

I think that's because by TNG's era they did away with yoeman's. The maids of Starfleet. They were frequently bringing coffee and stuff to the officers.

Re: Did Picard have an Officer's mess to eat in besides Ten

I want to know why Picard had a smaller office than Janeway and Sisko.

Re: Did Picard have an Officer's mess to eat in besides Ten

Well, Sisko's was originally designed for a Cardassian Gul, so that explains that. As for Janeway--I'm going completely by potentially-faulty memory here, but weren't her ready room and the conference area incorporated into one room?

I want to know why Archer had a ready room at all. Kirk didn't.

Re: Did Picard have an Officer's mess to eat in besides Ten

Kirk's was next to the bathroom.

No.

Re: Did Picard have an Officer's mess to eat in besides Ten

Different officers would probably promote different dining cultures, regardless of what spaces their ships had to offer.

Janeway was big on communal dining, for understandable reasons of morale. Plus her ship probably wasn't equipped with dozens upon dozens of alternate dining locations. Still, most of her officers were also witnessed enjoying private or shared meals in the privacy of quarters.

Picard's crew may have dined in vast mess halls, but Picard never was the type to mingle with the ratings, so we didn't learn whether this were the case. His officers generally preferred the privacy of their luxurious staterooms for their meals, only sharing drinks or desserts at 10-Fwd. But obviously there were places for dining with honored guests. Picard's crew was also shown using holodecks for dining, something the Janeway team also did on occasion.

Kirk's officers dined communally, and in any case didn't have personal replicators so couldn't very well use their cabins. Kirk himself was never shown eating with his junior officers, though - he'd entertain guests at the one or two differently sized dining lounges, but would usually (albeit seldom) be shown dining in his quarters.

The dining habits of Archer's crew would have been influenced by the technology of the ship. Top officers dined separately, and there was a general mess hall for others - out of necessity, apparently, since the ship still required a centralized galley, without even the sort of advanced dispenser system we saw aboard Kirk's ship.

The use of offices, ready rooms and the like would likewise depend on personal preference. No doubt Kirk had an office or two at his disposal, but he might simply have decided not to use those much.
