Deleted Scenes for III and IV

It seems like all of the Trek movies have a pretty good collection of deleted footage that you can find either in "special / directors edition" releases or on YouTube. For example, I find a lot of the TWOK deleted scenes, even it it's just audio, very interesting.

Does anyone know why there is no such material on TVH and TSFS? It seems like both of Nimoy's films are completely without any record of what ended up on the cutting room floor. I know there's some stuff in the comics and novelizations that was filmed, but I've hardly ever seen any evidence of it.

Nimoy probably found the theatrical versions of the two movies he directed sufficient and never felt the need to make extended cuts. Plus, by the time we reach the mid-80's, the trend of making extended cuts of movies for television was starting to fall by the wayside. That's really the only reason we've got the extended editions of TMP and TWOK.

There's not a lot cut out of III and IV, but there are a few things. Off the top of my head, for Search For Spock:
  1. McCoy enters the turbolift Kirk got into at the end of the first scene on the bridge and he's already acting weird.
  2. A shot or two of Valkris wearing a veil and/or mask and removing it just before hailing Commander Kruge.
  3. Some more shots of our heroes actually walking the steps of Mt. Seleya. The procession of Vulcans are seen to be levitating Spock's body somehow for the trek (har). There's a gathering of mourners/ supporters to witness them and Kirk is moved by the sight of them. Among the group is a Vulcan child who approaches Spock's body as it levitates by.
For Voyage Home:
  1. We see Sarek arrive at the Federation council during the Klingon ambassador's presentation and has a conversation with Dr. Chapel before making his surprise entrance.
  2. There might be some outtakes of the scene where Sulu encounters an ancestor of his as a young boy, though it's also just as likely they didn't manage to get any footage at all.
Can anyone think of more?

I just think it's odd that there's no evidence of deleted scenes anywhere aside from a few photographs. Like nothing has ever shown up in the home video market or even on some obscure YouTube channel. Heck, there's deleted scenes from TOS all over the place (fascinating BTW), so you know they don't just toss this stuff out.

I think the enormity of a 70 year old media franchise and the things that have trickled through over the decades might be coloring your perceptions here. In the grand scheme of things it's not really normal to be able to see deleted scenes from movies. The vast majority of what we have is thanks to moments in the early 80s and the 2000s where TV cuts and extra features were selling points. We've had some stuff leak from TOS, TWOK, and GEN (which all took decades). That's not a lot. I think the only one we can say they've been truly generous with is TFF, and even that is mostly thanks to the DVD market of the time and Shatner's interest in it the film.

We still have about as much evidence of Khan's child looking at the Genesis device as we do the various cut scenes from TSFS and TVH, for instance.

According to the top thread link, someone had a poor looking VHS clip of the scene.

Nimoy pretty much got his cut of the movies and Paramount was so cheap in those days they didn't film stuff they didn't have planned and didn't waste what they did film.

The little boy from IV got stage fright or something and wouldn't cooperate so they probably didn't film anything when that became clear (though kinda doubt they tried for that long, either and just wrote it off and moved on).

Yes I remember reading about this in William Shatner's movie memories book.
If I remember correctly from the book, the little boys mother wasn't helping. And as it was on location on the streets of San Francisco the filmmakers were quickly running out of time to get it shot.

That's not really how it works, cheap or not. Every film has deleted scenes, alternate takes, outtakes, etc. No exceptions. There is always more material shot than is used.

Yeah that's true, at least on the alternates and outtakes, etc. They definitely wouldn't have spent any effort in post production or editing beyond the initial pass..

I believe Barrett and Whitney rehearsed a page of emergency dialogue but only one line each made it into the final cut.

It would be nice to hear it. I did a TMP edit where I put Grace's damage report from Flashback on the comms as background after the V'Ger attack from the SLV. It would have been nice to have some more options.
