Hey, all. I tried finding an existing thread for this, with no luck, so here's my first post on the subject.

As evidenced by my avatar, one of my all-time favorite movies is The Crow. At the end of this month, its returning to theaters for a limited 30th-anniversary screening event...and I scored a ticket online! If you want your own, click the link below. Good luck...

Anyway, this thread isn't meant for just this one announcement - I just used it as a starting point. I didn't see a general film or TV discussion going on, so I'm hoping one flourishes from here. Have fun!
 
My favorite current TV show (which also streams) is PBS's On Story, which focuses on interviews with notable screenwriters. I'll be home again to check it out at 4:30.

There's also a nice biopic citculating in art houses this month: Remembering Gene Wilder.
 
I haven't watched PBS regularly in years, so I've never heard of On Story. The only Gene Wilder movies I ever saw, were the original Willy Wonka, and See No Evil, Hear See No Evil.
 
Here's the first official teaser image, of actor David Corenswet in character as the titular hero, in director James Gunn's 2025 film simply titled Superman.
Personally, I like the picture. The raised top on the cape is cool, along with the blue collar to accompany it. The cuts into the tops of the boots are a nice touch, but my favorite part is the shield itself. I'm glad they let it dominate his chest again like Man of Steel did, instead of shrinking it like Superman Returns. The style also seems to be based on either the "Kingdom Come" or "Crisis on Infinite Earths" comics, just with more color.

On top of that, I also like that in this shot, the costume seems a little roughed up. I never bought into the idea that just because Kal-El was borderline invincible, his outfit always had to be. After all, Doomsday literally tore it to shreds when they killed each other.

Anyway, these are just my thoughts so far - what's your take?

I'd like a good superman movie, but then I'm one of those that thought superman returns was superior to anything that's followed since.

Will be interesting to see what we get.

You're not the only one. I've felt that Superman movies have long felt like they had lost their focus. They need to return to the sense of optimism and humanity, and perhaps even scale it back to the basics. I felt that Snyder's take on the character was a misstep.

Sounds really interesting. I listened to a radio interview with Wilder over a decade ago and I really enjoyed his stories about how he got to work on Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles. Wilder is a fun gentleman to learn a lot about.

I have tried to get in to Superman post Man of Steel and just can't. I feel like the comics have added baggage that I wasn't aware of, since I primarily watched the Donnor film as a kid and then Man of Steel, and Lois and Clark. My enthusiasm for Superman wanes quite a bit so I think I'll skip this.

Ironically, I felt the early Supergirl seasons before it moved to the CW did better in capturing the spirit and optimism of the Donner movies than the recent movies.
 
Anyone watch Will Trent? The way they keep going back to Angie looking out for Crystal even though it doesn't serve any of the plots has to mean Crystal's the killer for the current case, right?
 
Con artist helps solve crimes, novelist helps solve crimes, fake psychic helps solve crimes, magician helps solve crimes, the devil helps solve crimes, math professor helps solve crimes.... if you had cleaning lady with high IQ helps solve crimes for the next police drama, you win!
 
I just got back from a 30th Anniversary screening of one of my favorite movies - you guessed it, The Crow. The picture and sound quality were amazing, which made me think the remaster supervised by original DP Dariusz Wolski was used for both this exhibition and the just-released 4K disc. My only disappointment about the screening itself, was that there weren't actually many people in attendance. The auditorium probably sat around 100 to 150 people, but I counted maybe 20, myself included. Also, Cinemark's website seemed to suggest that the movie's production designer Alex McDowell would be addressing the audience at some point, but all we got was a very brief video clip beforehand. I still loved seeing the movie on the big screen, so in that regard it gets top marks. But I'll grant the experience as a whole a middle grade, say 5 out of 10.

I have a bad feeling that Superman may have reached the end of his shelf life. What was historically a child wish-fulfillment concept may no longer be relevant to modern kids and a lot of the character's tropes are outdated, or nearly outdated. He may have gone the way of Little Orphan Annie and Tom Swift.

Here's a wild thought: But what if they were to make a period biopic about Superman's creation?

I'd probably enjoy it, just like I enjoyed "Hollywoodland," but the odds of WB greenlighting a movie about how they screwed over the creators of Superman for at least forty years are about as good as Alec Baldwin getting a job as a range safety instructor.
