Creative Challenge: Jonas Stays

Ok, let's go into "Pretend Land" again. It's the beginning of Season 7. Michael Shanks comes back to SG-1. The producers decide to keep Jonas as a character. How does the series continue with the addition of Jonas?

Here are the rules:
1) The plot arc of the show remains the mostly same in a general sense (ie. Anubis is half-ancient, Atlantis is found, RepliCarter is created, Janet dies, Jack becomes a general, etc).
2) You are welcome to adjust as you see fit w/o going in a completely different direction of what actually occurred.
3) Pick a few key episodes (your choice) and think how it would be different if Jonas was there.
4) You are encouraged to develop a background story arc for Jonas, be it character driven or story driven (it seemed that by season 8, all the leads had something they were dealing with)
5) You don't have to include Seasons 9 or 10 (or the movies), but bonus points if you do.

Have fun!

I'd rather have both Daniel and Jonas on the show, Fallout worked out well with both Daniel and Jonas in it.

Jonas was an EXCELLENT addition to the show, fantastic character. Daniel was never the same after he came back.

Daniel and Jonas we're too similar, I think over the long run the show would have lost a lot of personality with both. Ideally, I like Daniel to stay ascended and show up every now and then. But if Daniel had to come back, I guess it would be best to reassign Jonas to another duty and have him come in as a reoccuring character. I see him doing some sort of high level work like working as a alien advisor to the IOA.

I think Jonas was too smart. He managed to learn in 2 episodes what Daniel had to learn over the course of his entire life. "I'm a quick study" is not a good enough explanation.

I would have just assigned him to SG-2 and then I would have done a small storyline where Anubis becomes more interested in his physiology. I would have then tied that in to the creation of the Kull warriors, i.e. they're all clones of Jonas!

Daniel should have stayed "dead'. The actor left the show because his character wasn't big enough for him. He thought he was a big shot, and then he found out he is a useless bastard and returned to SG-1. Jonas should have stayed on the show. He was actually going to be a main character on Atlantis sometime during it's planning.

Sums it all up perfectly, one of the reasons why Daniel from season 7 onwards was just crap. Like the rest of the show.

That was just fan rumor. If there was going to be any SG-1 character to be on Atlantis during the planning stages, it was Martouf/Lantash. But that, of course, changed when they went in a different direction with his character.

Since no one is really playing the game, I’ll accept my own challenge. :p

Okay, Season Seven starts and "Fallen/Homecoming" are basically the same, but with Jonas deciding that he needs to remain with Stargate Command. At that point, Jonas remains a part of SG-1.

Daniel becomes SGC-bound while he regains his memories and works towards finding the “Lost City.” Despite this, Daniel occasional joins SG-1 on missions (such as in “Lifeboat” – which was a great Daniel episode; and “Enemy Mine”) for various reasons. The SGC-based episodes (such as “Fragile Balance” and “Chimera”) Daniel will play a role. By the time we get to “Evolution” and Janet’s death, Daniel feels that he needs to be back out there in the field.

Meanwhile, Jonas continues to be his happy-go-lucky self. Jack begins to warm up to him, shown by his playful hazing towards Jonas. Carter continues her “older sister” relationship with Jonas. For his plot arc, like Hermiod suggested, Anubis takes an interest in Jonas’s unique physiology and uses his research to make with eventually becomes the Kull warriors (although, I wouldn’t make them clones of Jonas). Jonas feels responsible and has a new reason to be out there fighting. In place of the events of "Fall Out", have an episode where the Kull Warriors attack Jonas’s home world, which makes Jonas feel guiltier. This could be a way to take away some of Jonas innocence. Also, for some reason, I can see Jonas coming with Carter on the “Space Race” mission.

In “Lost City” the entire team is out there on the planet where Jack gets his mind zapped (Daniel can be still researching for the Atlantis and SG-1 was the escort).

In season 8, we would have found Atlantis, Jack becomes a general, and Carter is promoted to SG-1 team leader. At this time, Daniel returns to SG-1, making it again a 4-person team, probably under the orders of Jack (at least that can be used to explain away how silly it might seem that a military unit has only 1 officer in it). Much of what happens to Daniel would be the same, now that he is a part of SG-1 again.

In “Lockdown,” Anubis is hell bent on leaving the SGC in Jonas body due to his physiology (same ending as in episode happens). I can also see Jonas trying to seek an apartment like Teal’c, but not being given clearance yet (maybe done more as a throwaway joke in “Affinity” than anything else – perhaps Jonas wants to be Teal’c’s roommate, much to Teal’c’s displeasure). By the time we get to “Reckoning”, Jonas is with Sam decoding the Ancient device on Dakara. In “Threads,” with the galaxy now safe, Jonas must struggle with the decision on whether or not to go back to his home world or stay on Earth, given his actions and indirect responsibility for having his home world attacked (twice) by Anubis and his Kull Warriors. By the end, he would learn that his fears were wrong as he is welcomed back as a hero. “Mobius” would be tricky, as he would disappear for a good portion of time during the alt-timeline part. Maybe have him appear as a host to a system lord or something, but also making him survive with Daniel in the past.

I don’t know how I would work Jonas into seasons 9 or 10. Perhaps he could just be written out of the series by saying that he is helping rebuild his world. Maybe he can pop in for the occasional guest spot. Or, if he had to continue on, maybe have his homeworld completely obliterated by the Ori (with only a handful of survivors, including Jonas, escaping to Earth). Jonas can rejoin Stargate Command at that point, but not necessarily have him as a member of SG-1.

Just my thoughts.

I wanted to see Jonas leading a Langaran resistence cell against the Orii, personally.

Kill of Daniel for good, have him get shot, have his brain sucked out, eaten by a lion, a boulder fall on him and then have the planet blow up.

That's how I would have handled it.

So you want his death to be low-key, I take it?

I was hoping Jonas would wear a swatch in every episode and once in a while, synchronize it.
