Craigslist: Site for Sex Slaves?

In the adult section of the popular website Craigslist, it looks as though the world's oldest profession has met up with modern technology, with a number of women offering companionship for a certain price.

But are all the femme fatales featured online consenting adults, or sex slaves?

I didn't see the story on World News...but I am sure some of you did...if you watch ABC.

"I do think it's fair to call it both trafficking and sexual exploitation," said Malika Saada Saar, executive director and founder of the Rebecca Project for Human Rights, a non-profit assisting the two young women. "I think in the same way that we can't sell crack cocaine over Craigslist, we can't allow prostitution to happen over Craigslist."

Agreed.

Really not Craigslists fault, or problem, more so the problem of the people posting the ads, they are the ones that should be sought after, Criagslist is just a place to post stuff. Let's put the blame where the blame belongs.

Craigslist is an awewsome site, simply awesome. I like going to the personal ads and putting up fake messages to trick stupid horny men.

As an aside, I have a large collection of dick photos sent to me by stupid horny men, and I don't know what I can do with them. Suggestions welcome

As always, the answer is either blackmail or your own porno site.

I thought there was a big story a couple years ago about how Craiglist closed the "escort" section. Unless they're just posting in the "singles" section now.

I thought it was pretty common knowledge Craigslist has both feet in the grave. Everything is either spam, fake ads (runabouts) or sting operations.

You could argue that's only in the escort/personals section, but I would argue it's only a matter of time before it spreads.

All the hookers have to do is change the word "massage" to "intimate dining room set" and spam the furniture forum.

So then the furniture forum will be nothing but hookers and cops pretending to be hookers pretending to be selling furniture.

Craigslist was a great idea, but it has grown beyond its original intention. A free ad service can't operate on that level without spam taking over.

Agreed.

Make it legal (as it should be) and legitimate and you would end the vast majority of problems associated with the profession... The puritanical mindset has to end for our country to move forward.

I find it highly doubtfull that there are any more legit hookers on CL, and if there are they are more likely to be "independent" instead of sex slaves

There are probably no sex slaves on Craigslist; the crusaders are just using that as an excuse to harass the prostitutes. As Data Holmes says, there is no excuse for prostitution being illegal.

I think the rest of the states should follow Vegas. Make it legal and tax it.

Instant revenue and a safer environment for all because there would be regulations.

Craig's List isn't responsible for anyone doing anything illegal on its site. Like YouTube, they just give people a venue.

Backpage is a better place if you want to look at hooker photos.

And yea, prostitution is just another front for terrorists.

The legalization and regulation of prostitution would do more to protect sex trade workers than any crackdown ever could.

I can tell you as someone who works for a major erotic services advertising directory: I agree with the latter, but I can assure you you're wrong on the former. CL is/was a hot bed for traffickers, pimps and just plain scammers. The police, despite public blustering, love CL because nabbing traffickers and pimps from there is like shooting fish in a barrel.

 Backpage is scam-a-minute, dude. The new CL, except a step farther in that they fake the majority of their content for reciprocal linking to various review boards and increased google traffic.

Actually prostitution is illegal in Las Vegas. It's permitted in 11 of Nevada's 17 counties, but Clark County, where Las Vegas is located, isn't among them.

Of course, we all know how well anti-prostitution laws work. Why, it's practically impossible to find a hooker in Vegas!

^^ I didn't even bother to try when I was there.

On Craigslist you can find advertisements for people who have been kidnapped and are forced to perform sexually against their will?

YES. Before they were forced by the gov't to charge for advertising and collect personal info, 80% of Craigslist's erotic services posts were spam/scam, 15% were traffic victims being advertised by their pimps, and the remaining 5% were actual, independent escorts working free of coercison.

Craigslist has always had a poor reputation in the sex worker community, and most legit workers avoid it. Most real, independent sex workers advertise elsewhere than craigslist and backpage, and often maintain a comprehensive online presence spanning numerous review boards, paid advertisements on erotic services malls (where they are vetted and their personal info kept on file by the staff of said maills), personal websites and screening services.

Sex trafficking remains major problem in the US, and Craigslist is/was a primary venue to advertise the services of traffic victims, usually "agencies" advertising Russian, Asian or Central American women being the main offenders. It was easy to advertise traffic victims, because CL posts were untraceable for a long time, and all you had to do was steal someone else's photos then bait 'n switch the customer. Traffickers are also consistent in their unwillingness to pay for advertising or offer traceable information to higher-caliber advertising venues, which is why the bulk of them moved off of CL once CL began charging for ES advertising, and onto free sites like Backpage.

Yeah, but that's always been the argument for legalizing it. Once it is legalized the need for this underground circuit disappears, and police can concentrate on the better things like child prostitution, which will (hopefully) forever remain illegal.

It seems that a lot of police departments are happy doing the bare minimum, however. They'll bust 30 people a year on CL and then do a news article about how great they are.

I've read articles about police parking outside hotels and waiting for 'obvious Johns'. One even described an 'obvious John'. A guy who didn't drive his own car, didn't have luggage and was talking on a cell phone.

REALLY? What if that guy went out, and was coming back, thus not driving his own car, not carrying his luggage and carrying his phone?

Another article said carrying condoms is evidence you are either a sex worker or looking for one. Spare me.

My favorite is the strip club bust for indecent exposure. OK, I know they're talking about the guys, but it just sounds so ridiculous.

My point is it seems a lot of police departments have disregarded the real crimes in exchange for the easy (high-volume) crimes, which they only bust to save face... even if half the time they 'save face' they're actually embarrassing themselves.

That's... odd. I've never had to input personal information other than my email address...

Casual hookups. One-night-fling. Fuck-and-chuck. So I like a bit of hee-haw without any strings attached. Sue me.

Never come across any exploited sex workers of any age, of either gender on there. Most of the ads however are spam-mines. You post an ad looking for action you will get swamped with garbage, you have to take steps:

For example I state in my postings "Put 'Obama Brand Ketchup' in the subject line or I will delete your your email."

From one posting I'll get hundreds of, all from the same bots... all from hotmail, gmail or yahoo. Of those, maybe 20 will actually be people. Of them... most will be just a line or two of gibberish and a cock-shot. From there I take the three or four "real people" and chat them up via email.

It's really no different than pulling at a club or bar... it's just done online.
