Coupling (BBC)

Mr Light

Admiral
Admiral
A few weeks ago I finished watching this series for the first time... what do you think of it if you've seen it?

For those unaware it was a British comedy that ran 4 seasons around 2000. It's a sex/relationship based comedy about six guys n gals with lots of sexual references and some curse words even. Also, it stars Jack Davenport, aka the stiff British admiral who loved Elizabeth from Pirates of the Caribbean.

I thought it was pretty funny, hilarious at times. My favorite character was Jeff, who was a awkward and lame sex-obsessed guy who would go off on insane rants about little things especially around women. Unfortunately he wasn't in the final season; what's the behind the scenes reason for that? I didn't really care for the new guy.

My favorite female character was Jane, who just completely insane and psycho in a hilariously disturbing way.

I think he just wanted to do other things.

What's even more disturbing is that I find her more attractive, the more stalker insane she gets....

Yeah, Coupling is great. I thought Oliver got better as the final series went on, and as he became his own character, rather than a Jeff replacement.
Jeff's rants and hang ups were fantastic, the giggle loop, the sock gap, the melty man, the fact that he had too many legs.

Now do one with his other favorite word. ;)

I absolutely love Coupling. I recently rewatched the whole thing and it's still great as always. Oliver still doesn't quite work for me (some of his gags and lines could have easily been Jeff), but Richard Mylan did very well considering the situation and what he was given. As for Richard Coyle (Jeff), he left because he didn't want to be typecast.

My favorite characters are Jeff and Jane (I've grown a lot of appreciation for Gina Bellman after seeing her terrific performance in Moffat's Jekyll).

In case you aren't aware, you'll find quite a bit of discussion about its writer, Steven Moffat's, other work over in the Doctor Who forum, where his scripts for the series have him in the running to win his third Hugo in three years. He's currently scripting the Spielberg/Jackson Tintin movie.

The Oliver character didn't work for me either. They just should not have added a new character at all and just left it as is.

Right up until the last act, The Naked Living Room could've featured Jeff instead of Oliver with absolutely no line substitutions. It wasn't until the very end where Oliver's personality took over (calling out Jane on her bisexuality, which Jeff never would have had the balls to do).

I liked the Oliver character enough, but he was replacing an irreplaceable character so he was never going to get a fair shake regardless of how well he did.

My wife and I loved it.

What is interesting is the different style British comedies are done it.

American comedies tend to have their jokes, rapid fire one after the other.

British comedies often set up their jokes then don't deliver the punchline until 20 minutes later. Something that seems to make them several times funnier.

Yup, Coupling in particular relies building up the joke or setting up something that appears mundane but outright hilarious later on. A good example of this is Jeff's conversation with the Israeli girl in "A Girl with Two Breasts."

Shadayim! "Five minutes, Breasts."

Great show. Hard not to really like Jeff. I didn't mind Oliver, it would have been better to keep Jeff but you can't hold that against Oliver.

Not sure if you're aware but they made an American version. Most of the episodes were copies of the british show and it didn't last very long, but it wasn't bad. I think if it had been given more of a go it would have done an office and stand on its own quite well.

I started watching the show again (for the fourth time) last week. Man I love it. :D

Breasts, breasts, breasts. ;)
