Correct form of address

I don't see another place where this really fits, and since it's about fic I'll leave it here.

If you have a Chief Petty Officer, he or she will be referred to informally as "Chief" or a little more formally as "CPO". If you have a Petty Officer 1st Class or 2nd Class, what would be the informal address? Is it just "Mr." or "Ms."?

I would think (at least in TOS) they would use common US Navy protocols for formal vs. casual address...

Simply "Chief" was obviously used in various moments in various Star Treks (TNG/DS9 for Chief O'Brien). I would assume in any formal ceremony "Chief Petty Officer" would be used.

Thanks for the response, but I don't think you finished reading the question. I agree on "Chief," but for a lower rating, a PO1 or a PO2, what is the informal address?

In the US military, Mr. or Ms. are reserved for officers, not for enlisted. Petty Officers are referred to as "Petty Officer Smith".

True, but for whatever Starfleet doesn't seem to universally follow this principle, for instance O'Brien was referred to as "Mister O'Brien" on many occasions, and Simon Tarses, a "crewman first class medical technician" (likely equivalent to either a RN AB1 [OR-2] or more likely a LH [OR-4]) was also referred to as "Mister Tarses" on occasion during his only episode.

However, this is a bit of an outlier so it's worth considering the "Rating Surname" approach based on their jobs (for example "Yeoman Rand"), which while not universally applied in the RW, at least doesn't contradict it. Simon for instance might be (promotable to) "Medical Technician Tarses" and DS9 recuring character Enrique Muniz would be "Engineering Technican Muniz*".

*Given that he is O'Brien's second in command, then he should be an E4 at minimum, although he apparent death at 18 (no source given) would make this virtually impossible if true (and he doesn't look that young either, I'd say at least ten years older personally).

Nothing was said about Muniz being O'Brien's number one, he was just an engineer on his staff, like Stevens, Boq'ta or Neela.

Can’t speak to how it’s done in the real service but in ST I’ve seen them just revert to using the last name. “Smith, you and Jennings work on the EPS grid.” That kind of thing. At least that was the case in DS9.
In Enterprise they would use the term “crewman” but I think that designated a NOC. It was unclear what their rank was.

Everyone knows StarFleet is the Coast Guard, not the Navy (red stripe on the cutters to make them go faster.. total giveaway)..
