Civ 4: Star Trek Mod = Amazing!

I've been a civilization computer game fan since Civ1. I just discovered the awesome Star Trek Mod (which actually is a mod of a mod.. the Final Frontier Space Mod made for Civ4).

Let's just say it's awesome. You colonize planets. Make fleets of ships and defend or attack opposing star systems.

Great music that changes as your technology improves, from Enterprise-Voyager music.

Many many races and leaders included, such as Shinzon: Romulans. Or Martok: Klingons. Gul Dukat: Cardassians.

Buy Civ 4, install this mod, and play today!

I just finished downloading this mod. Thanks for the heads up. Going to play it this weekend.

Re: Civ 4: Star Trek Mod

This mod also has scenarios such as Deep Space Nine and Xindi Attack that let you play out specific events in the Star Trek universe.

Do you have a link to screengrabs.

I am unfamilar with Civ 4. is it a planetary game to advance only a planet from Stone age to Space age?
It's essentially a good old fashioned civilization simulator. In the basic game (the game itself is far from basic :p) you guide a small tribe towards building cities, farms, military units, and discovering new technologies along the way, eventually creating a large country among other rival civilizations, involving trade, war, diplomacy, etc. It does span the stone age up until the modern age and beyond (the game ends in the year 2050), although you can end the game in many ways (through focusing on culture, military, technology and research, or diplomacy) depending on your long term strategy - this itself depends on which civilizations you choose, as you start off with different technologies, and as later versions of the game have proven, each civilization is geared towards a certain type of gameplay though you may play it as you wish: as the Mongols I played to crush allcomers, while as the Germans I played to out-produce everyone and gain several technologies, for instance.

Civ4 is highly moddable, and there have been numerous fan-based mods (some of the better ones of which have also appeared with the official expansions) where you can recreate specific world conflicts, play in different settings (including a future world, a fantasy world, and outer space itself) etc. One of the more inventive mods has you playing as the Barbarians, with your objective being to destroy Civilization itself.

So far I've played about 4 games of the original Trek mod, I have not played any of the scenarios yet.

One thing I learned, unfortunately, is that 15 player games run way too slow as years advance.

I did play an 8 player game to the end and it ran very smooth with no more than 5 seconds wait inbetween turns.

Here are some sample screenshots:

I've only played one game in the Enterprise mod so far and the overall mod design looks pretty good. Unfortunately, it looks like I won't be playing it again for a bit since my hard drive spontaneously decided to not be recognized anymore. :borg:

I found the vanilla space scenario in Civ 4 really tedious, so it'd be interesting to see what a Trek twist does to it.

I've been playing it for the last few days. It's OK, but I wouldn't call it any more than that. Frankly the Final Frontier mod is weak, and the Trek modifications really don't change that much. They just dress it up a little differently. Still, I have to admit I'm enjoying it more than BotF, which suffered from too much executive interference.

Looks like this mod requires Civ IV: Beyond the Sword enhancement in order to function. It seems to be a bit more difficult to find than some of the others. I'll try to track it down and let you all know how it works.

Would you say this is better or worse than BotF, or entirely different?

Personal opinion is it's better, but it's also much newer.

Downside is, I feel like I'm playing the beta version of a game to be released. The maker is releasing the version 2.0 of the mod soon, or so the forums say, which will add considerable changes to the tech tree.

Still had some fun with it, probably haven't played more than 5 games or so. Has anyone checked out the other scenario-mods... like Deep Space Nine or Xindi War?

Tried installing it and I get this weird error before the game starts and crashes:

I guess other people got it to work, I have no idea what's wrong, aside from the fact there's no elegant installer. You have to unzip 3 files and put them in the mods directory, and I think one of the copies got munged. Still awaiting approval to join their forums to find out what happened.

Well, after several days of waiting to have my account verified on the CivFanatics board without any response, I've given up. I honestly don't know why it won't load. A shame - it looked really good. :(

I never got it to work, sadly. Was really looking forward to it too.

Civ V will be coming out later on in the year. Hopefully they'll do a mod for that.

LOL. Thank you for informing me that Civ 5 is being released. I seriously did not believe what you wrote.

Normally it's FOREVER between versions. Looks interesting, I hope multiplayer runs more smoothly.
