Cheap Option for Uhura's Earpiece?

JE Smith

I'm planning a comedy sketch and would like to have an Uhura-type character, but every time I search for replicas of her signature ear piece, they are all machined aluminum for $100 or more. They're gorgeous items, but my budget simply can't withstand that price for such a small/insignificant-to-the-script prop. Did anyone ever do a low-end version made of plastic? I can't recall there ever being a toy version of it. Basically trying to avoid having to make one myself. Any help or pointers are much appreciated! :)

Wouldn't it be relatively easy to glue a few pieces of plastic (cardboard!?!) together (and onto one of these foam-hearing protectors)?

^and if they had a stereo camera to do a scan of the ear the piece is supposed to fit into it would be perfect...

Probably, and if I end up having to do that, I will -- but when you're the sole producer on project with a lot of props and a lot of various things to deal with, if I can find something pre-made for 20-ish bucks, it's just one more thing off my plate. :)

...a replica? Go stick it in your ear.

(Honestly, I tried really, really hard not to post that)

Since it is a comedy sketch, why worry about it looking like the real thing. Go for laughs and make it something odd, maybe even eatable!

Use a lipstick and then part way through the sketch, pull out a compact mirror and put on the lipstick.

...a banana with the word "EARPIECE" written on it?
