Charile X: What are those lines in Kirk's shirt about?

Kryton

About 13 mins into the TOS-R broadcast version, Kirk is wearing the gold shirt (he wore the green tunic earlier) while he tells Charle there's "no right way" to swat a woman on the ass.

There is a distinct VERTICAL line on the shirt and a less distinct horizontal line. I do not remember ever seeing such a thing in previous airings (I don't own the DVD sets). So what's the deal with that? Anyone know?

(On further watching, it seems that they are the normal seams (no pun intended) of how they constructed the shirt in the first place. Was this somehow ENHANCED? 'Cause I KNOWI would have mentally filed a "what's up with Kirk's shirt seams" thing in the back of my brain...!)

(second edit) Now Kirk and Charlie, immediately after that scene, go straight to the bridge...and he's in the GREEN TUNIC again! Okay...I'm thinking THAT'S due to the syndication edits...or I'm HOPING, anyway! :)

I'm more puzzled by the fact it says:
"Re: Charile X: What are those lines in Kirk's shirt about?"

in the quick reply form, while your topic title seems correct

Nope, an original goof. Although one might suspect that Kirk works up a bit of a sweat whenever he tries to reason with Charlie (who's he to say that women's bottoms shouldn't be slapped?), and thus feels the need to change as often as possible. Nothing to prevent him from taking the turbolift to a short detour to his cabin and getting a clean shirt... Especially if his cabin is close to the bridge, Ready Room style, as might be logical.

(Yes, I know he walks on Deck 5 when en route to his cabin in "Journey to Babel", but I postulate he had temporarily moved away from his regular cabin to accommodate the dignitaries - much like Uhura accommodated Elaan of Troyius in her cabin. In "Charlie ", the shirt might well be waiting on Deck 2 or 3, along the turbolift route.)

As seen here: screencap.

It is a hidden zipper that ran down that seem. The velour material used in the first two seasons shrank after each cleaning. In this case, the shirt shrank so much that the hidden zipper wasn't so hidden anymore.

Maybe the Enterprise turbolift has a switch Kirk can flip similar to the 1966 Batman's batpole that Adam West would hit as Bruce Wayne and wind up as Batman once he got down to the Batcave. :guffaw:

My mother, Home Ec Expert Extraordinaire (not only with degrees in it, but just all around amazing with everything) noticed that they should have been using black zippers instead of white through most of the first season, which is what you do for non-white costumes and such.

Then again, considering the budget, perhaps that's all they had, though you'd think they'd save the good ones for principals.

Yes, I had noticed this myself. There are other occasions early in the show where you can tell that they have zippers in the tunics as well. They don't look bad.

Hidden zipper my tail !
Then again I bet they never thought anyone would notice the zippers way back when long before digital televions.

* Really *

The zippers were noticeable long before digital TV. So have most of the things people point out on the DVDs. TV broadcasts of the 60s and 70s, etc. contained less resolution, certainly, than today, but I have yet to see anything major pointed out by people viewing the DVDs on hi-def sets that I hadn't noticed for years. Small things like the designs inside an emblem, perhaps, but zippers and lace-up boots (Arena), etc., no, been there, seen that in 1975.

^ I see you managed to get your shirt off again.....
