Character Ratings: Vash

Vash a perfect 10.

I'm constantly admiring writer Ira Steven Behr who created Vash for the series. The character is an explorer with an expertise in archaeology, an adventurer, a female Indiana Jones. In the episodes where she appears, this beautiful brunette, with her beguiling smile and blue eyes, manages to charm not only the good captain of the Enterprise but the omnipotent Q as well.

I've always seen the Picard/Vash relationship as an homage to the great romantic film pairings of the 40's. Vash is Bacall to Picard's Bogart. The very compelling 'battle of wills' dynamic to the Picard/Vash relationship is reminiscent of Bogart and Bacall in the classic movie "To Have and Have Not." Vash's brazenness complements Picard's more sedate personality perfectly. She is the ideal foil for Picard's straight man. The characterizations and relationship dynamics between Picard and Vash makes this pairing a pure joy to watch.

Around the fourth season, Michael Piller, the show's associate executive producer, inquired about marrying Picard to Vash to provide some new story dynamics for Picard. The studio executives killed the idea of marrying off the captain. The shipboard marriage idea survived in the fourth season episode "Data's Day" where Miles O'Brien married Keiko Ishikawa. I always wondered how that P/V marriage might have looked if it had come to pass with my P/V fanfic simply being my own speculation. Would they have shown more of Vash's academic side? Would they have put her on dig sites or in lecture halls? (DS9's episode "Qless" refers to the Daystrom Institute wanting her to speak on her travels.) Would they have shown more of Picard's interest in archaeology? Or would Vash have become a reoccurring bit player, the officer's wife/civilian scientist role that Keiko played?

In my opinion, Vash is one of those underutilized characters with a virtual goldmine of untapped potential. Granted, I'm sure my P/V fanfic stories center more on Vash and her relationship with Picard than the series realistically would have if it had gone the P/V marriage direction but that is the glory of writing fanfic.

Warmest Wishes,
Whoa Nellie

Brilliant, outstanding, stunning, thrilling, exciting...

I have all of Trigun on DVD you know.

Oops, wrong Vash...

Dull, insipid, a waste of script space. I just couldn't see her with Picard at all. No chemistry.

3/10

Not bad in Captain's Holiday, but a waste thereafter. Jennifer Hetrick isn't bad looking, but her performance often left me cold. True Q is a complete mess, with a depiction of Robin Hood less convincing than Kevin Costner's. Vash was pointless and irritating with her constant whining and intoning of "RAAAHbin Herd".

Not a favourite.

I kinda liked Vash. She was fun and got under the captain's skin.

I just realized Vala on Stargate is cut from a similar mold.

Gotta agree with you there. She wasn’t the best recurring character by any means, though she was pretty interesting in Captain’s Holiday.

She gets a 4 from me.

8, just for her legs.

Nah, not jsut for the legs; she's a pretty cool character - liked her Captain's Holiday a lot.

She was a bit TOS'ish... Which made her stand out in the TNG episodes.

Her acting was a bit over the top, though...

Poor attempt at adding Marion Ravenwood from the Indiana Jones trilogy to Star Trek.

I loved Vash. I can't think of a single TNG episode that she was in that I didn't thoroughly enjoy. She was a great character and gets an 8 from me.

5

I liked her introduction in 'Captain's Holiday', but hated her whinin' in 'QPid'. Didn't care at all for her in DS9 'Q Less', either.

She would have been better off if she had just been around for that one first episode.

Interesting character. Beautiful, fun to watch, nice legs, but her high-school whining about "Didn't Jean-Luc ever mention me?" brought her down from about an 8 to a 5.

8.

A character with great potential, but she was only in three episodes, and one of them was on Deep Space Nine!

8 - I even like some of the stuff the Expanded Universe did with her.

She was accidentally sent back in time 25,000 and became one of the greatest philosophers of Bajor's history
