Chakotay's tattoo

Frontman

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Ok so we know Chakotay is playing native Mexican "Indian" but his tattoo seems in the style of native New Zealand - The Maori.
Like for instance on the photo

Seeing in the movies Native South American usually don't have face tattoos but occasional paint which can be removed.
But when it comes to native Mexicans I don't know much but from what I know they didn't wear this kind of tattoos and they of course didn't seem to live in tribes like South American natives.
So did they miss the point and made a mistake with Chakotay's tattoo? Beltran himself said that he is playing Native Mexican "Indian". Who is supposedly following this long tradition.

EDIT: Ooops now I found the info "It was a combination of Maori and Filipino." You can delete the topic.

Actually I saw an interview with Beltram where he said the tattoo was based on those from New Zealand - this was very early on in Voyager history.

Didn't the episode say that the tattoo was from the culture of the space men that looked after his tribe who came form the delta Quadrant?

Classical, refuted and disproved theories about a great convoy of canoes left Polynesia to found New Zealand at some point around the 11th century where upon these "Maori" exterminated the indigenous population: The Maorioi. Of course the refuted bit is what sort of boats they used and where they came from. I saw "part" of a Documentary where some anthropologist launched a trimaran form Egypt to try and prove that that was perhaps the real origin of the Maori people.

The Maori are from New Zealand.

So you're both right.

Yes I know mairbear - New Zealand/Maories are our neighbours here in Australia.

I posted that before I saw the OP's edit......maybe that's what got you confused :)
