Cast Tim Burton's Wizard of Oz!

Inspired by the WoO thread.

Tim Burton has "remade" Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and Chocolate Factory, he's also done an Oz-related TV movie. But I think it's only a matter of time before he decides to do his own vision of The Wizard of Oz.

So, who would he cast in the movie to play the various characters?

(The only "rule" is that you MUST use Johnny Depp)

My picks:

Dorthy: Christina Ricci
Scarecrow: Johnny Depp
Tin Man: Tim Roth
Cowardly Lion: Alan Rickman
The Wizard: Christopher Lee
Glenda The Good Witch: Stephen Fry
The Wicked Witch of the West: Helena Bonham Carter

I picked Johnny Depp as the Scarecrow before I even opened the thread.

Great casting! But who plays Toto?

Depp as the Scarecrow is probably the first thing on everyone's mind. What about Paul Reubens as the Tin Man?

I'm gonna go one step further with Johnny Depp. I bet if Tim Burton was to remake Oz, Johnny Depp would play the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, the Lion, AND the Wizard. I'm not saying that to be sarcastic, or a jerk... I really think that sounds like something Burton would do.

I think he would really expand upon the dream motif, using Depp to signify different parts of Dorothy's psyche. I just can't decide who Depp would be in the "real" world. Uncle Henry, or some version of "Professor Marvel". So, for me, it comes down to who plays the Witch, Glinda, and Dorothy.

In keeping with the dream theory, I would say that Glinda and Aunt Em (under old age makeup) are the same actress. Winona Ryder maybe? She may be too old now, and I don't know what her working relationship is with Depp (Ex BF) and Burton anymore.

I don't think there's any doubt that the Witch/Elmyra Gulch would be Helena Bonham Carter.

It's Dorothy that gives me pause. I'm going to say Dakota Fanning because she is kind of the default young actress I think of, but I'm sure an unknown would probably be for the best.

Depp as the Scarecrow is too easy. I'd rather see him in the Wizard/Professor Marvel archetype. Knowing Burton he'd cast that damn Oompa Loompa guy as a Munchkin, if not all of them.

Dorothy: (somebody young)
Scarecrow: Steve Buscemi
Tin Man: Michael Clark Duncan
Cowardly Lion: Chris Kristofferson
The Wizard: Martin Landau (or Paul Giamatti)
Glenda The Good Witch: Jessica Lange
The Wicked Witch of the West: Helena Bonham Carter
The Wicked Witch of the East: Christina Ricci
Uncle Henry: Albert Finney
Auntie Em: Annette Benning
Munchkin Mayor: Danny Devito

Professor Marvel/Wizard: Johnny Depp
Dorothy: Bonnie Wright
Auntie Em: Sally Field (she'd need aging makeup)
Uncle Henry: Judd Hirsch
Hunk/Scarecrow: Connor Trinneer
Hickory/Tin Man: Tom Hanks
Zeke/Cowardly Lion: Jim Carrey
Elvira Gulch/Wicked Witch: Pauley Perrette
Glinda: Catherine Zeta Jones

Pretty much my choices, except I want Christopher Walken as the Wizard and you just have to have Winona Ryder as Glinda. :)

I think I'd puke up a lung if this were to happen for real.
Beyond sick to death of Burton and his wanky-gothic-Depp-shitfests

When I made my picks I half considered making Depp play Dorthy's menagerie -not The Wizard, though.

Basically I would pick your list, but probably go differently with Dorothy, Tin Man, and The Wizard.

LOL @ Stephen Fry as Glinda. HAHAHA!

I'd definitely go with Johnny Depp as the Scarecrow. And I'm thinkin' if they hadn't already used Zooey Deschanel in Tin Man, she woulda made a great Dorothy.

'Cause you just KNOW there'd be some kind of UST played upon more heavily between the Scarecrow and Dorothy. I just can't see that not happening in a Burton WoO.

LOVE the idea of Alan Rickman as the Cowardly Lion, as well as Christopher Lee as the Wizard.

And taking a peek at IMDb, I see the TV movie the OP was referring to.... I'd never heard of that one!

What the HELL, people. Depp has to be Dorothy! :rommie:

Oh all right...

Dorothy: Ellen Page
Scarecrow: Woody Harrelson
Tin Man: Steve Buscemi
Cowardly Lion: Robert Downey, Jr.
The Wizard: William Shatner (shame on everyone that I was the first to suggest this!)
Glinda The Good Witch: Meryl Streep
The Wicked Witch of the West: Johnny Depp :p
But who plays Toto?
Eddie from Frasier.

I think I'd puke up a lung if this were to happen for real.

Burton isn't out there far enough to make this palatable in a sick way. There's only one director permitted to remake The Wizard of Oz: David Lynch.

(The only "rule" is that you MUST use Johnny Depp)

Dorothy: Ellen Page
Scarecrow: Doug Jones
Tin Man: Tim Roth
Cowardly Lion: Alfred Molina
Professor Marvel/The Wizard/Emerald City Door Guard/Carriage Driver/Wizard's Doorman: Johnny Depp
Glenda the Good Witch: Jewel Staite
The Wicked Witch of the West: Helena Bonham Carter
Aunt Em: Margot Kidder
Uncle Henry: Rene Auberjonois

Geez Louise! The one film I want Burton and Depp to make is Dark Shadows (they own the rights)...and they keep putting it off for all kinds of silliness. After every film that comes out, they say DS is next...and then they announce some other film they are making that has an earlier release date...???!!!
