It was announced a while back that the digital audiobook company Audible.com was going to be working with Neil Gaiman on an adaptation of his Sandman comic book series, and Gaiman has now revealed that it will have one hell of a cast.
Here's the cast list from IGN:
  • Riz Ahmed as The Corinthian
  • Kat Dennings as Death
  • Taron Egerton as John Constantine
  • Neil Gaiman as The Narrator
  • James McAvoy as Morpheus
  • Samantha Morton as Urania Blackwell
  • Bebe Neuwirth as The Siamese Cat
  • Andy Serkis as Matthew the Raven
  • Michael Sheen as Lucifer
  • Justin Vivian Bond as Desire
  • Arthur Darville as William Shakespeare
  • William Hope as Doctor Destiny
  • Matthew Horne as Hob Gadling
  • Reginald D. Hunter as J'onn J'onzz
  • Sue Johnston as Unity Kinkaid
  • Paterson Joseph as The Demon Choronzon
  • Josie Lawrence as Mad Hettie
  • Anton Lesser as Doctor John Hathaway
  • Joanna Lumley as Lady Johanna Constantine
  • Miriam Margoyles as Despair
Along with narrating the series, Gaiman will also be writing the scripts himself.

I was just on my way here to post this news!

I love a lot of these castings, especially Kat Dennings as Death and Andy Serkis as Matthew (arguably the best character outside of the Endless siblings)!

July 15 cannot come soon enough.

Kat Dennings as Death is the most fucked up insult to this source material I can imagine happening. Seriously, was literally every other woman on earth busy? Yeah, fuck this entire production. It was bad enough that she was the worst part of the first two Thor films, but ruining Sandman is too far. Maybe they wasted all the casting budget on James McAvoy, but literally picking a random person off the street would be better then Dennings. It doesn't even have to be a woman, Michael Caine would make a better Death then Dennings.

I hope this thing crashes and burns, but unfortunately some people will buy anything, as seen by those terrible Sandman spinoffs DC is currently selling in comic form. This must be how Watchmen fans felt when Before Watchmen and Doomsday Clock were made, except even then Watchmen fans didn't have to deal with Kat Dennings.

Wow, what a cast. What a ****ing cast !

Joanna Lumley.

And Miriam Margoyles ! Joy !

Gaiman's not going to let this go south - he's got a lot of friends and his fingerprints are all over this !

Who'd have thought that Two Broke Girls was so popular on a Star Trek forum. Either that or some people are just being contrarians, which is much more likely then anyone actually thinking that Kat Dennings should be allowed to voice Death.

I know you don't really care, but if you searched my post history about Kat Dennings, you'll see that I'm hardly a contrarian on this point and that I've always been a fan of hers, often noting she was one of few great things about the otherwise disappointing Thor: The Dark World.

But I also recognize I'm in the minority on that count. I just don't insult people who don't agree with me or the projects that utilize her. ;)

I'll admit, she isn't someone who immediately jumps out as Death to me, but now that she is I think she'll be great in the role.

I was surprised that Dennings was playing Death, mainly because her voice isn't as "spritely" as I imagined Death's voice being. IE: higher pitched. As an actress, I think she's fine, so I'll be more than willing to give her a shot. As long as she pulls off the spunky charm of Death (not a phrase I ever thought I'd type) I'll be happy.

Whether you like Dennings or not, it's obvious how involved Gaiman is with this whole thing. Casting her could hardly be described as disrespect ing the source material.

What does Neil Gaiman know about Sandman! ;)

I mean he only created the character, but other than that, what does Neil Gaiman know about Sandman?

Well, he wrote the vast majority, if not all the stories about Sandman.

Okay, other than creating the character and writing the vast majority, if not all the stories about Sandman, what does Neil Gaiman know about Sandman?

Apologies to Monty Python.

So, apart from creating the character, writing the comics, narrating the audio dramas and writing the audio scripts, what has Neil Gaiman got to do with it ?

Alright, that's it! This has gotten too silly! Stop it, stop it at once!

Yeah, I understand that concern and perhaps she'll change the pitch of her voice for this role. But what appeals to me about her for this role is her spunkiness her characters tend to have and that matches well with Death.

That's assuming that Gaiman had any say on who got cast, which is far from a given. Anyway, the creator is usually the worst person to work on projects with properties they invented after the initial product. See: Roddenberry, Gene; Rowling, J.K. and Lucas, George for creators that completely shit the bed trying to work on franchises that they originally invented.

Gaiman working on this project means nothing, anyway. They probably threw some money at him, like DC does every decade or so to shit out a new Sandman Universe story. I like the main and a lot of his work, but he hasn't written anything good involving The Endless since the 90s, with the second Death mini-series from 1996 being the last good Sandman related thing that he wrote (although Sandman characters had a few good later appearances, like when Death showed up in a Lex Luthor headlined Action Comics run).

Sandman Overture?

Sandman Overture?

That was absolutely terrible and pointless. It was a quick cash grab that Gaiman obviously either put zero effort into or is just incapable of writing Sandman stories anymore. He still does good work nowadays, but when it comes to Sandman/The Endless he obviously got tired and worn out with the material in the 90s and has never got the "magic" back that he used to have with those characters.
