"Carriers" trailer (Chris Pine, Piper Perabo, Emily VanCamp)

Aragorn

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
And Christopher Meloni.

Carriers (trailer on shocktillyoudrop.com)

This movie is actually a couple years old. Been pushed back a few times already. I guess they're trying to capitalize on Chris Pine (wow, Star Trek as a star-maker, not a star-killer!). Unfortunately, this is a PG-13 cut while the original cut was R.

Comes out September 4, when all the kids have gone back to school and the summer spending piggy bank is empty.

Looks good. But I think they did themselves a disservice not to trust that a story of the breakdown of humanity in people caused by the sheer need for survival would be enough to carry this movie, and instead felt they needed to add some ghoulish zombie action. ;) I'm sure that normal people in this situation can be monsters enough for any film. The zombies show lack of faith in their own material.

This is the best outbreak film I've seen in ages. I have no idea why the studio worked so hard to bury it. I can only guess the swine flu outbreak scared them off or they thought it was too cerebral for the usual horror audience (this isn't a zombie movie despite how the trailer looks; most the film's action comes in the form of paranoia a highly contagious outbreak causes).

What works great about Carriers is the extreme myopic view it takes in the quest to reach the beach safe house. Interspersed throughout the movie are dozens of intersecting story snippets on the lives and deaths of other survivors. They almost never come to any concrete resolution, instead remaining a mystery making the world seem very big, dangerous, and out-of-control.

I'm gonna check it out, but I have to admit that nothing about it is really getting me giddy. I suppose, if I was a teenage girl with a Chris Pine fetish.

Paramount really missed out with Pine's popularity. Crap like Pandorum gets a wide release but this doesn't? Weird.

I was reading a review this morning, which said:

"...It’s disappointing to see how off the mark the Hollywood marketing machine can be sometimes. Properly marketed, this is a film that could have appealed to a wide audience and could have been moderately successful. With the current swine flu fear that’s sweeping around the world, it’s certainly as timely as any other film that’s in release right now. A bit of research revealed that the film was completed back in 2007, and because it was produced by Paramount Vantage — which no longer exists — it was shelved by Paramount. Most likely the only reason they’re releasing it now is to capitalize on Chris Pine’s new found fame with this summer’s release of Star Trek..."

They'd be disappointed because he's established as a major asshole straight off the bat (there's a whole jock/nerd dynamic going on with his brother) though

they do a great turn around with his character and the brother by the end (it's another case where the "little stories" within the movie really flesh it out).

saw it. it was ok. Piper Parabo's still pretty even when she's infected.
I was seriously impressed by her. Parabo is a great actress. Where has Hollywood been hiding her at?

This.

We had enough "Zombie apocalypse" movies already. That's nothing very original anymore. Do a pandemic movie without zombies for a change.

28 Days Later showed that the biggest threat was other humans near the end of the film.. that worked pretty well in this one, too.

Teenage girls not attracted to a guy who's a major asshole?

You sure about that?

Heh.
