"Cargo" (2009) - The First Swiss Sci-Fi Movie!

I've just seen this movie on Blu-Ray and my opinion is that it is just awesome considering its low budget (4 500 000 Swiss Franks) and the fact that it's the first Sci-Fi movie Switzerland has ever produced. It's about a cargo ship transporting materials for the construction of a new space station orbiting a planet outside our solar system. I prefer not to spoil any more of the plot, but the movie's definitely worth watching. Here's a trailer with English subtitles and an IMDB link.

Great, thanks for the tip, i'll try and check this out soon it looks very promising.

Doesn't seem to be out to buy on DVD in the UK though, may have to take other measures for the time being.

I hope it comes out soon! :)

OK I watched this last night and I have to agree with the OP that it is well worth a watch. For just shy of $5 million they have made a film that is on 10 times the scale on Moon for about the same price. Moon was already a grand budgetary achievement, so this is really unbelievable. Although it seemed to have this weird problem where the big scale effects were just beautifully done, staggering attention to detail and superb design and concepts, yet they fluffed some of the really basic bluescreen shots, I don't know what that's all about.

I'd liken the atmosphere and design to something like Alien, quite tense, very downbeat indeed, dark and lonely. It certainly had that grand Ridley Scott feeling to it. I have mixed feelings about it plot wise, I thought it suffered from plausibility problems at times, was slightly derivative of films I cannot mention without giving away spoilers, and probably could have done with being 20 minutes shorter. It dragged a little through the middle but overall was quite interesting.

The acting seemed to be pretty good, but when you're listening in German and flitting between subtitles (which were clearly written by someone who speaks German as a first language and English as a second on my copy) it can be quite hard to tell.

For fans of Silent Running, Alien, Outland, I say give it a shot. You may find yourself with mixed feelings about the movie overall like I did, but you'll certainly find many things to enjoy about this great effort.

Oh, and try and see it in HD if you can, I suspect the scale of some of the effects shots will be wasted on DVD. Anyway, thanks to Truth Seeker for a much appreciated recommendation, this is precisely the sort of Sci-Fi movie I am always on the look out for.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, Pingfah. I don't speak German myself so I watched it with English subtitles, but I hope they make a dubbed version in the future.

Re: "Cargo"

plot synopsis & part of review:
Laura, a medic, is the only conscious crew member aboard a transport ship called the Kassandra. Or is she? - but it promptly degrades into a rather predictable whodunit of sorts whose mystery lays in finding out what the Kassandra is actually transporting.

It attempts to play by a consistent set of logic and rules, as all hard science fiction should, however any in-depth analysis of the plot reveals how shaky it actually is.

The effects work is impressive for the scale of the production and it is far more ambitious than most science fiction films regardless of how much budget they have to work with.

I want to see it as it is a sci fi film set in space.

the imdb page has release date of
USA November 2009 (American Film Market)
Anyone know when this will be on Blu-ray/DVD in Region 1?

I love watching German language films, if for no other reason than picking out all the words our two languages have in common. ;)

I don't watch dubbed live-action films, though...only animated ones. I want subtitles, so that I can hear the voices of the actors, even if I can't understand their words. I always watch samurai films, for example, in Japanese.
