Cardassians in new Trek shows

I haven't noticed any Cardassians in the newer Trek shows. I wonder why. They are one of the most interesting species. Maybe the makeup is a pain for the actors.

Oh yeah. She wasn't fully Cardassian if I recall correctly. It's been years since I've watched that season.

DSC made full Cardassian makeup for S4, but I don't think it was ever actually shown on screen.

We could see them on SNW. It's been established the Federation has already contacted them, and even has good relations (Pike has Cardassian military honors...) and that really doesn't cause any sort of continuity errors. I'm actually hoping SNW DOES use them.

Might be an interesting story to actually see when the military seizes control from the Detapa Council. It could be right around the SNW time. Although it's implied the First Republic fell during Tobin Dax's lifetime, so... SNW might be just a bit too far. Perhaps more so into the early military junta.

There was indeed a blink-and-you'll-miss-it Cardassian in another episode of DIS.

IMO, the Cardassians have become so synonymous with DS9 now that any future appearance of them is more of just a deliberate nod or shout out towards DS9 than any real desire by current writers or producers to revisit them.

I think LDS S2 started with a holo sim about a Cardie interrogation story with 4 lights

indeed it did. All part of Mariners holo-training program. They are also…
featured a bit in Lower Decks S4

it feels like SNW is a bit early to feature them. But they could always introduce them as a mostly peaceful people pre-Central Command take over.

The Legate's Crest of Valor was a prestigious award.

At some point during the 23rd century, Federation Starfleet captain Christopher Pike was awarded the Legate's Crest of Valor. (DIS: "Brother")

During her time on the USS Enterprise, Una Chin-Riley was awarded this medal. It, along with other awards, was listed in her personnel file, in the section "USS Enterprise - NCC-1701 Medals and Decorations". (SNW: "Ad Astra per Aspera")

During the Occupation of Bajor, Cardassian Dr. Crell Moset won this award after accidentally discovering the cure for the Fostossa virus epidemic and saving thousands of Bajorans' lives. (VOY: "Nothing Human")

Probably because it feels like DS9 used them up.

Same with Klingons.

What more can be done?

I don't think the story of Cardassia is completed at all.

I for one would love to see a show set on Cardassia about how they transition into a democracy. It could be a political thriller/spy thriller about Cardassia's history of authoritarianism and how they have to come to terms with their past.

I didn't say "complete."

I said they feel "used up, " like nothing more can be done. Like the Klingons, they are stuck in either belligerent enemies or reluctant allies.

Not saying difficult. Just feels spent.

All I can say is, they don't feel used up to me. And I think telling the story of Cardassia's transition to democracy on its own terms, rather than in terms of how they relate to the UFP, would be a cool story.

In Picard season 3, the Cardassians don’t appear but a reference to what may or may not be their space does.

The Titan hides in the Chin’toka Scrapyard. The Chin’toka system is the beachhead of the Federation’s invasion of Cardassian space during the Dominion War. It’s Cardassian space during Deep Space Nine and referenced to be not far from Bajor.

However, it’s possible that since the Titan is able to hide there, the system might be claimed by the Federation after the war. Or that maybe Cardassia has moved towards joining the Federation, since the Cardassians after the Dominion War are in almost exactly the same position the Bajorans were after the occupation.

I always thought post-war Cardassia would be an interesting topic, since their position would be similar to Germany after World War II. I have to believe the Klingons and Romulans took pieces of their territory as part of the armistice. Maybe even set up their own friendly puppet regimes in the segments of Cardassian space they controlled. Also, after near genocide and probably being labeled as collaborators and betrayers of the Alpha Quadrant, a path towards Federation membership would be a way out. In canon, Cardassia is a resource poor planet. Hence, the reason why they strip-mined Bajor. So rebuilding after the Dominion War would be a struggle even under normal circumstances.

The Alpha Quadrant map in Admiral Clancy's office in S1 of Picard does place Cardassia within Federation space, indicating they could be Federation members by 2399. Though strangely enough, there is also still a DMZ, despite the fact that should have been disbanded when the Dominion War started.

If the DMZ returned, then it would relate to protecting non-Cardassian settlers within the zone.

That, or, its to help keep the Cardassian Union stable. Since they aren't a position to conquer anything.
