Captain Picard's Ready Room Desk

ThunderAeroI

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
I am looking for information about the desk in Captain Picard's Ready Room. There are conflicting sources on what it shape it had, and it's size seems ridiculously large based on what little pixel math I can calculate.

Using the Official Enterprise D plans, the desk appears to be about 35" wide along the main axis with the ready room itself the size of a house. That can't be right.

Is there any official drawings or measurements?

Thanks.

Just eyeballing it, I'd say it's about 2 & a half feet tall, 2 feet wide, & maybe 4 feet from the rounded end to the curve, & maybe another 2 feet after the curve, also enlarging to maybe 3 & a half feet wide at that end

Edit: BTW, can we talk about how boring this man's office is? :guffaw:

It's an office, not his quarters. Although even those were sort of spartan.

I always liked it. It's cosy, yet suited for work and small meetings. There are lots of varied textures and shapes. What's boring about it, and furthermore, how exciting should an office be?

I always thought the whole inside of the Enterprise D looked like a very pleasant work environment. That's one reason I like it, it makes the impression that it was designed from an in-universe perspective on what environment would be acceptable for long term habitation and work.

It's probably the 2nd most frequented room he goes in on that ship, & it's his. The only personal things in it are a crystal stress toy, a 4 inch deep fish tank, a Shakespeare book in glass, a ship painting & model ship that look like they came standard with the room, & one shelf with the saddest plant on the ship & 2 generic knickknacks, like a decorative plate & a cross-section of something maybe, that look like they came from a craft store. (Though I suppose they could be significant)

Albeit, from this view, it seems there might be some terrariums or some such under his sofa end tables

Thank GOD For Professor Galen giving him the Kurlan Naiskos. Jellico of all people brought more personality into that room in the mere week or so he took it over, than Picard brought to it in like 8 years. They have a briefing room & conference rooms for the real formal stuff... but that room is his.

In this pic alone, even if I were conservative like Picard, I'd have maybe a decorative rug & a standing plant in the nook on the left wall, not to mention a few more wall ornaments, even though it's a professional workspace. Even the desk has open space against the wall, for something. Maybe if he was crafty, he spirited away the Tox Uthat

Edit: You know: I bet Maxwell was right. I bet it does smell like a bureaucrat's office lol

The austere nature is very Picard, though. He's never struck me as someone who would have a lot of trinkets or souvenirs. Given he has spent his entire adult life in Starfleet, and hasn't looked back since leaving the family farm, I wouldn't be surprised if he could fit his entire life in one rucksack - a few clothes and a couple of books.

Yeah it is his, but he still might feel that it represents him as a captain, so he might prefer to keep it professional. He's not gonna have his Dixon Hill holonovel posters on the wall there

But on that damn Starship Painting. Yeah that would be the first thing I'd remove if I became Captain. I'm already on a Starship, I don't need a painting of one on the wall.
But it's also true that if I lived in the Federation in the 24th century I would never be Captain. Instead I'd probably frolic across meadows on some Garden Colony while naked

I think the painting might make sense. Is it just me or do naval officers often have models/pictures of their current ships in their offices? They’re usually on the ship, but, unlike us, they see them from the outside less often. I imagine captains look at their ships with great pride. A proud, non-family man like Picard...could make sense to me. As mentioned, for all his myriad interests, he’s not going to put a Dixon Hill or equestrian or what have you painting on his main office wall.

Well s I said I'd never actually be Captain of a Starship, and I'm not the kind of person who lovingly gazes at ships (those two things might have something to do with each other:lol:)
But you have a point that it makes sense for Picard and other Captains, though of the things you list I think a painting of something equestrian-related would be acceptable as well for the ready room of a Captain.

I always got the feeling that the painting came with the ship. Its lovely, but it does have a vibe of 'showroom decoration' to it.

And it's not the only painting like that, there's also starship paintings similar to it in various crew quarters.
I guess it's because the production used concept artwork (maybe also from the movies?) to print them?
