Cally and Avon?

Guy Gardener

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
Twice now (I'm half way through Blake's Seven's Season III) Cally has been taken over by some godlike telepathic entity and these creatures first move to take over the ship and crew was to play upon an attraction Cally seemed to be totally keeping mum about towards Avon.

Then there was that venomous protest she made about her banishment from her homeworld where she spat "Why do you think I stay? It's not to be close to him!?" Which just reminded me completely of when Buffy and Spike were first boning because she wasn't impressed with herself.

Were they shagging?

Well, there seemed to be a mutual attraction but I don't think they ever really got together. Avon was pretty complicated and most of the time still hung up on his former girl friend.

Oh, that Anna Grant gal?

I mean that must have made his ego do cartwheels. I mean sure his heart broke from the sadness of rekilling his "true love" but on the other hand, she was created for him. There was nothing about Anna Grant which was not pandering treat towards the man, by default she was perfect foe Avon because she had to be, otherwise the dread secret agent couldn't get her job done.

Cally on the other hand kept calling him a heartless monster using the most dissolving tones, she was quite quintessentially the AntiAnna, which is just what Avon needed if not before he killed his zombie girlfriend, then certainly after since he would never ever believe in something that perfect for him ever again.

I'm about to start season 4.

No more Cally.

I recall Soolin being quite the tall drink of water, but then the first thing Dana did with our man Avon was taste test his tonsils.

Poor Villa sleeps alone. :(

Though Villa did get lucky on one episode. Can't remember the episode title but it did feature Colin Baker as Baban The Beast.

City at the End of the World.

(As if stealing the Star Trek Federation Sigil wern't a gross enough afront.)

Cinderella complex. Villa mocked and spurned her. Then all Kerril did was take off the leather body armour, have a bath and the thief is all tangled up his tongue in his show laces.

Yeah I thought it was riff on the Trek episode title. Story is Paul Darrow's scenery chewing in Timelash was a little revenge for Colin Baker's in City At The End Of the World :)

I was tinking the other day about how quickly Servelan became a love interest for both Tarrant and Avon (Stick their name together and you get "curdle". Goddness! That explains so much.) but if they like Blake were knocked out of the running, and more after that, until Villa accidentally inheirited the big boys pants, well... Does that mean that the Supreme Commander would begin to see him in a different light?

Well the main Avon/Cally juicy stuff is in Sarcophagus, the Tanith Lee episode. Other than that I don't know if there's too much obviously between them, though there is clearly an attraction. Especially in series 1 they seemed to be playing up Blake as the romantic lead, and in Bounty when Tyce leaves both Jenna and Cally look bitchy and jealous.
And of course when Cally died her last word was Blake.

Technically speaking Villa and Tarrant are the only two crew members that we know got their end away (With Keril and Servalan respectively) although I always thought Tarrant and Dayna might have had a bit of a thing. They seemed to be enjoying themselves in Ultraworld anyway.

Avon and Servalan had a delicious love/hate relationship going on too.

Glynnis Barber! *sigh* What a stunner she was. I wish Dempsey and Makepiece was on video.

It's worth thinking of Sarcophagus as the final part of a trilogy that began two episodes earlier, all of which play around with the emotions of Cally, Servalan and Avon.

In Children of Auron, Cally's species is largely wiped out (including her clone twins), while Servalan's cloned 'babies are killed (which she senses telepathically as she's linked to them - something Jacqueline Pearce regarded as a sci-fi miscarriage, hence the chartacter switching from white to black outfits in symbolic mourning).
In Rumours of Death Servalan's broken by being overthrown in her own palace, only to get her spirits back after seeing Avon broken by the truth about Anna Grant.
Then you have Sarcophaguc dealing with the thirtd side of the triangle, Avon and Cally...

Never a huge fan of Children of Auron so I don't tend to rewatch it that often. I absolutely adore Sarcophagus and Rumours of Death though (in fact I only watched RoD a few weeks ago).

One of the great things about Blake's 7 was that the character's relationships were in constant flux (well...some of them). Avon cared for Cally and she for him---but only to a point. Avon and Servalan were dangerously alike---but only to a point.

Avon's ability to manipulate Cally's emotions in Sarcophagus was entirely for her own good, and the good of the crew, but he never completely lets the audience know just how much of his own emotions come into play. And when Cally dies, her last thought, which Avon hears, is "Blake." That had to hurt in more ways than just one.

Damn, I miss this show. I wish they'd release the DVDs in the US so I can show it to my hubby. He'd love it.

I really need to rewatch it. The first time, I just rushed through the series, so I don't remember particular episodes too well. I recently watched all of nuBSG, was overall disappointed with it and felt the need to rewatch Blake's 7. Dark Sci Fi done much better, if you ask me.

Feel free to import the region 2 release they are superb and are much cheaper when they first came out when I bought them.

I don't think they ever hooked up beyond the kiss in the Tanith Lee episode. I think it was more of an unspoken love, even though by the end Cally was kind of obvious about it. I think Avon had a mutual adoration and respect for her, more so seen when he mentions her somberly several times in season 4.

I guess we'll never know. In some ways I like that. It's another example to me of the intelligence and character work on this show.

They're still making audio stories. Jan Chapel did a Cally Prequel I saw advertised on a website recently. So they could pull any coloured rabbit out of there hat just to freak with us out and jostle the status quo.

Here's a detrimental thought, the way Avon said "Cally's dead!" was almost exactly the same tone as Blake used when he said "Gan's dead!" and honestly, if Avon reacts the same when his lover dies as Blake does when Gan dies, does that mean that Blake and Gan were lovers?

If he was gay however, however unlikely, that would have been a fantastic defence at his trial for paedophilia in the pilot: "I'm sorry but if I was going to sexually abuse children, it wouldn't be "that" gender."

I dunno, he seemed awful fond of Jenna (then again who wouldn't be!)

I'm awfully pissed that this still isn't on DVD in the States. :(
I don't think they'll ever release a R1 version of the show the market just isn't there.
