Break Dancing proposed as new sport at 2024 Paris Olmpics

Some might say ‘it’s dancing, not sport’, but no one who has seen breaking done right, can say it’s not athletic. Consider also, how women’s floor exercise in gymnastics has blurred the lines between dancing and gymnastics.

France may also be proposing this because they have some serious break dancing talent. Google “Les Twins” sometime. Anyway, after giving it some thought, I’m all for it. Hip hop invades the Olympics, I love it.

Well, there's already tons of performance sports out there.

But you want to drive ratings, try Competitive Rap Battle. ;)

I would like this if it was part of the Winter games. There are too many summer events already. You can dance anytime of the year. You can also do Gymnastics anytime of the year too but Winter already has its equivalent in figure skating.

I think the reason it is being considered for the summer games is because France has the summer games and because breaking isn't directly related to winter.

I also think there is a good chance that breaking could end up being one of the most popular events at the Games.

So does this mean if it's successful and they have it again at the 2028 Olympics, we can call it...

wait for it...

wait for it...

...Olympics 2: Electric Boogaloo?

This would make sense. If it was the 80's! I'm afraid all the good break dancers now might break a bone instead of a move, if you ask them to go out and perform at their current ages.

Jayson the only thing about Breaking that stopped in the 80's was many of us paying attention to it. Break dancing is VERY much alive and well not just in the US but all over the world.

Additionally, it is being practiced by young people who probably see it as something new. Google "break dancing", (Les Twins, in particular). Actually, a YouTube search is probably better. You'll see what I mean.

I like the Onion article about this.

“Hip hop and street performance are all about conforming to a set of calculable rules.”

If they add this, they should also add ballroom dancing (I've watched a lot of that, and it definitely can be considered athletic - the top dancers are in very good physical condition).

Any chance exotic dancing might also make it? It would bring in a new audience but clearly should only be shown late at night. Call it "Olmpics:After Dark."

All these performance sports being considered and Obstacle Course Racing still far off. I guess though I gave up on there being justice in the universe in 2016.

Do they have Olympic darts?
That would be fun to Watch.
Or bowling?
If they had those in the Olympics there could be fat old people winning gold medals.
The Olympics is ageist.
I know there is some 70 something year old that competed in the last Winter Olympics he is like an icon for his country, but he doesn't win.
Like joining the Jamaican bobsled team.
You get to compete in the Olympics but you cone in 187th out of 187.
