Spoilers Black Mirror - Season 7

So my rankings would probably be like this, and they're weirdly almost in reverse order.

1. Uss Callister: Into Infinity. Just loved it, great cast, the effects were wonderful and I was genuinely surprised when Jesse Plemons turned up. It seems Robert Daly was always destined to be bad, whereas James Walton wasn't. I knew where it'd go because the first time we see Daly he casts a really nasy look towards the blonde sitting in Walton's car. I do love Plemons, he can play lovely characters and terrible ones with ease. Milioti is genuinely wonderful.

2. Eulogy. Heartbreaking but thankfully didn't go down some of the roads I expected too. Setting aside the future tech this was an incredibly grounded story anchored by two great performances. As @The Nth Doctor says, that Philip was able to move on at the end actually made this feel uplifting despite the bittersweet nature of the story.

Joint 3rd. Plaything, mainly down to Capaldi's wonderful portrayal, and the fact that it caught me off guard.

Joint 3rd. Hotel Reverie. Loved the set up, loved the cast (Emma Corin can do no wrong in my eyes) all that lets it down is the length (which makes it feel baggy in places) and the fact it didn't really have an original bone in it's body

5. Bête Noire. Thankfully it ended up a trifle more playful than it started out. Interesting idea but of all of them this felt the most out there.

6. Common People. Don't get me wrong, it's fantastically written and the leads were great, but the unremitting despair just made it a really hard watch. To be honest one of the reasons I've enjoyed the Netflix era of Black Mirror more than the Channel 4 era is that it hasn't been quite as bleak and nihilistic and this felt very much like a throwback.

Pound for pound this was probably as good a season, if not better than season 6, though I do miss the horror elements that made Loch Henry and Demon 79 so good.

Here's a question for people. As with last season Brooker has taken a pop at Netflix (and other streamers) in Common People over subscription models/ads/price gouging etc. My question is this, does Brooker using Netflix's money and platform to take a pop at them make him a champion of freedom for taking on 'the man' or does the fact that he's happy to (presumably) bank a shed load of money from Netflix and provide them with content to help them keep running and keep doing all those horrible things mean he's kinda a hypocrite?

I'll be honest I'm not sure where sit on this.

Agreed completely. Very well done, very on brand, but right now, nihilism isn't what I want right now.

Based on the number of relatively happy ending we got this season, I can't help but wonder if Charlie Booker feels the same way.

That's a fair question...

...and honestly, I don't think it matters to me. I enjoy the critiques he's making of streaming models but I don't care that he's making a profit from them at the same time.
