News Big Finish casts another First Doctor

I listened once to some fan audios that threw together random Doctor/companion pairings based on who the amateur actors could do the best (or least worst) impressions of. That’s the vibe I’m getting off the trailer for this.

A while ago Big Finish suggested they were going to trim their output by pulling back on some of the more tangential spin-offs. If this kind of thing was what they were making room for, not sure that was the best idea.

I'm not opposed to recasting past Doctors, though I would rather have actors creating a performance than impressionists imitating a performance. If that's what Big Finish is going for here -- Noonan is going to develop a performance of his own rather than imitate Hartnell's performance -- then they really should come out and say because while I would be happy with a recast Doctor who sounds nothing like the original -- and Noonan sounds nothing like Hartnell -- I can't imagine that the vast majority of Big Finish's audience would be interested in such a thing.

I honestly don't really care. I'm so far behind on Big Finish right now that I'm still busy playing catch up on all of the regular stuff I want to listen to as soon as I can. For the most part, I'm not thrilled about the recastings (although I'm willing to give the Sadie Miller audios a shot) and I'd rather stick to the Companion Chronicle narratives than anything else.

Dunno if David Bradley is done or if Noonan is just for later companions or what, but this will certainly help with Big Finish’s evident desire to put out as much product as possible.
Bradley is apparently continuing as well. It looks as if his First Doctor is being thought of as at home with the Nine onward range from the shows return, whereas the new guy is in the "old" range.

As there's loads of crossovers between the two eras I'm not sure it's a meaningful distinction, but...

Per the Big Finish podcast, while Bradley hasn't quit or anything and may return for special occasions, Noonan is the focus going forward. I would guess that Bradley might be a bit expensive for BF to use regularly in an era where they're apparently going to treat every Doctor they have access to equally, regardless of whether they have any original cast members to work with. Plus he's still a busy actor in a way that other BF Doctors (Tennant and Eccleston to the side) aren't.

Noonan is pretty plainly doing an impression of Hartnell; the announcement and podcast make it clear that he put a lot of effort into learning about and sounding like Hartnell. I personally think (based on the limited sample available, but again it's what they chose to release with the announcement) that it's a pretty bad impression, focusing on high-pitched tremulousness and ignoring everything else about Hartnell, but it's still an impression. If they were going in a more original direction, I imagine they would have looked for a better known performer for it.

As they're describing it, it's new adventures with just (the recast) Dodo set between 'The Savages' and 'The War Machines,' so that rules out Peter Purves as One since Steven's left the show at this point. Bradley's still working with the 'Season 1b' (actually An Adventure in Space and Time) cast, though he may eventually get to work with a recast Vicki. William Russell was working in the Season One/Two era with Carole, Maureen and a recast Barbara, but is almost certainly done at this point given his age.

In an audio medium, if a part with a recast actor isn't trying to sound like the original actor, isn't it just basically a new character? In a format where the vocal performance is so important, just having a random sounding guy playing a role and calling him The First Doctor seems like it would be really unsatisfying. At least Bradley got to appear on an episode/special of the show, so most Doctor Who fans have a point of reference for his version of the 1st Doctor.

What's weird is that he sounded more like Troughton with the TARDIS distortion on but more like McCoy when they stepped outside.

One of the big problems is that it's a... mixed imitation from a company that usually manages to at least capture the spirit of the original actors performances with some vocal similarities via a Culshaw, or is very lucky in getting a solid impressionist like Jonathon Carley that really pulls off sounding like a young Doctor.

To his credit, Noonan has gone all in on the mannerisms and quirks of the original, but at the cost of having a voice that simply isn't at all like Hartnell's. Decent chance it'll get better with time; it's just a very jarring first impression from a production company that usually pulls off positive ones.

As the closest thing there has ever been to a cockney doctor, I feel personally affronted.

If Bradley’s continuing then what’s the point?

I love Doctor Who. My number one show. However, I fucking hate Big Finish.

Damn, that's some strong feelings. I don't think I've ever seen anyone hate Big Finish and I use to hang out in the GallifreyBase forum devoted to it.

I had a strong dislike to it pretty early on… it in some ways seemed like an anti-NA project from Gary Russell, whilst also depending on Benny for a lot of it’s early material. After that it just feels like hideously expensive niche that whilst sometimes doing cool stuff is also stretching things.
Sometimes I like the odd thing here and there but sometimes it feels like a sort of club.
(Things got Better once Briggs took over)
