Okay, I'm a little bit fascinated by the phenomenon of fan fiction. And while any readers of it know that 95% of it is unreadable crapola; however, with some perseverance sometimes you come across really amazingly written pieces that equal or better the official source material.

Have you ever found any? What? Where?

I'm not sure if links to stories are kosher by the board rules, but if they are, link 'em up (if not, mentioning titles, authors and source sites will do) - any fandom, any genre, excellent writing only!

'Cause I'm just curious how good is the good stuff and how much of it is out there...

I liked the one where the Minbari from Babylon 5 chase an Earth Alliance ship into Federation (Starfleet) territory, see the Enterprise meeting up with Chancellor Gorkon (in the Undiscovered Country) and open fire on both of them.

It's like a Michael Bay film...not terribly written but seeing an interstellar war involving the Gorn, Minbari, Vorlons, both Earths, Klingons, Romulans, and just about everyone else makes for good popcorn fanfiction.

It's called "A Thin Veneer" over at fanfiction.net.

I've read fanfiction for about 30 years. I liken it to panning for gold. There is so much dross out there that you have to wade through to get to the nuggets of gold, but when you find it, the good stuff can be awesome. Most of the notable stuff I've read has been in zines and I doubt there are links on line. I'll have to go look up some titles since I can enthusiastically recommend stuff, but my aged memory can't recall any damn titles!

Back in between DS9's Sixth and Seventh Season, and early S7, when I was a member at the PsiPhi DS9 board, there was a guy named John Burke who wrote this really great Alt-S7 of DS9, featuring different takes on some characters, some new characters, and some less-common Trek species stepping up. I had it downloaded on four-computers-ago or so, but it's long gone. I've been wanting to read it for some time now to see if I still think it's as good now that I'm grown up, and have never been able to find it online. :(

Truth be told, I can't even remember the title of the thing.

Haven't read all of them, but I thought Agent Orange's Cowboy Bebop fanfiction was pretty good.

http://www.big-big-truck.com/bebop/ao/

I was only able to read about half of the first volume, but the Babylon 5 alternate universe epic "A Dark, Distorted Mirror" seems incredible.

http://www.b5-dark-mirror.co.uk/index.html

A dark, Distorted Mirror is incredible-I read all 1,000,000+ words of it, all 5 books and it is on a par with LOTR in terms of scope and creativity.

I suggest the Jerry LaSalle stories over at Epiphany Trek, Part of The Phoenix Inn. There's a particular story over there called The Long Patrol that's fantastic.

We have a fanfic thread in the fanfic forum:

http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=30253

and this site:

http://www.unitedtrek.org/

has great stuff-check Tales of the USS Bluefin as an example of pro-level writing hidden in fanfic.

I also suggest the Arc of the Wolf stories(saga, whatever) over at Ad Astra. See my sig for the link. The author is SL Watson, but you should also check PSGarak, Little Black Dog and Nerys Ghemor. :alienblush: And my stuff, I guess, although I doubt it's on the same level as the aforementioned authors.

In general, the whole fanfic scene lost me a few years back when it was (or at least seemed to be) taken over by the slash element, which meant virtually every story I came across had the male leads doing X-rated things to each other. I know it's nothing new (as folks who remember some of the earlier Trek fanfic and even professionally published novels can attest) but I hated it. Aside from it not being my cup of tea (being a male heterosexual who had no interest in reading about Odo and Quark doing unspeakable things with Odo's bucket), most of it was so poorly written as to be unbelievable.

That's why when I do come across a great piece of fanfic, it stands out. I remember someone did a fantastic DS9/Space: 1999 crossover. The thing ran a couple hundred pages and whoever wrote it did such a good job with the characters, it actually reactivated my interest in Space: 1999 and DS9 for awhile. I wish I could read it again, but I've long lost track of where I found it.

There have been others (like The Doctor and the Enterprise, borderline fanfic because it was professionally published albeit unauthorized) but that's the one that really stands out.

One other thing that annoys me re:fanfic is there's a number of people who seem to think that professionally published novels based upon properties like Trek and Doctor Who are also fanfic. I came across a bookstore owner who wouldn't carry Trek novels because he looked down upon "fanfic". Maybe people have different opinions, but once a book is published by a professional publisher, and is also licensed by the property owner, it cannot be fanfic. Also, fanfic is primarily written by amateurs, not professional writers. Yes, many pros started in fanfic, and there's some overlap. But they're two entirely different animals, as far as I'm concerned. I don't think Keith R.A. DeCanido or Greg Cox or any of the other professional writers in this BBS who have written for the Trek and Doctor Who franchises (among others) consider themselves fanfic writers!

Oh, that really sounds interesting. I've only read short fanfics, nothing as long and huge in scope. I really wish I could read it and compare it to the actual season 7, which was a strange mix of brilliance (Cardassian rebellion storyline), mediocrity (Worf/Ezri/Bashir triangle) and stupidity (the Pah-wraiths).

:guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw: Fanfic writers do come up with all sorts of nonsense, but I haven't heard of that one before.

Unfortunately, a lot of fanfiction is just porn, whether it's slash or heterosexual pairings, and a lot of features really unbelievable events and out of character behavior. What I am especially amazed at is the randomness of many of the pairings. That is really why I have stayed away from all fanfiction for a long time, after being burned by some bad examples, going back to the days of the X-Files. But I've recently started to search through the world of fanfiction again, and it is worth it when you find some gems among the crap. Even the crap or almost crap is not that unbearable, at least it can make me laugh or I get an insight into other fans' mindset. :)

I haven't read any fanzines and I haven't read that many fanfics altogether, as I'm relatively new to this world, but I've found a dozen or so that were worth reading.

Here are a couple of DS9 fanfics I really enjoyed. They're based on the "five things that never happened" concept.

Five Things Which Never Happened. Five roads not taken between Kira and Dukat. Exploration of a relationship. NOT a romance.
by Selena
- and amazingly, it is not porn, either. :D As it says, 5 short AU stories that explore different possible outcomes to events described in certain DS9 episodes and how they could have affected the Kira/Dukat dynamic. Quite dark stories, well written and with good characterization.

Paths Not Taken Five things which never happened between Garak and Bashir.
by the same author- exactly the same thing as above, only it's Garak/Bashir dynamic. Again, good characterization, dark stories, and believe it or not, this one is not porn, either.

And here's a BSG fanfic - a short character piece by the same author, The Quality of Mercy. Four conversations Laura Roslin has in the four weeks before her death.
This one is not AU, just an elaboration of canon events from season 4, although it does feature a non-canon (but possible) explanation of a certain event. I like it for the good characterization of everyone - Roslin, Caprica, Ellen, Baltar, and even Tory (something that rarely happened on the show itself, which was all too happy to make her into an eeeevil character we are meant to despise).

Of course, our own PS Garak/Enabran Tainted, Nerys Ghemor / Nerys Dukat and others on Trek BBS have written some great stuff, but you can find their stories in the Fanfiction subforum or linked in their signatures. :)

I just want to throw in something that's not especially high quality, but sticks around in my memory just because of how strange it is: The Day of the Barney

Ah, The Day of the Barney. Worth reading just for the premise...:)
I was going to ask what the premise is, but then I saw this:
This is Firewing's edit/repost of the Day of the Barney trilogy,
one of two repost editions known to the author. This edition has been
checked and corrected (no story text deleted) by Firewing the Gryphon
(jberger@nyx.cs.du.edu), and was originally posted to the Usenet
newsgroup "alt.sex.bestiality.barney".
I think I get the idea. :rommie: :cardie:

Hm, I think I'd rather read the one about Quark and Odo's bucket (well, not really, but if those were the only choices... :cardie: )

^^^ Actually, in the page or so I read, there wasn't anything like that -- it appears to be a horror story about Barney taking over the world and killing everyone over the age of 13. I didn't notice that tag ... gross! There's a whole newsgroup for that?

Yeah, there's no actual bestiality in it. Basically...

Barney has everyone over the age of 13 killed so he can have an army of children to do his bidding, as well as resurrect his reptilian race by (artificially) impregnating the girls as they become capable of bearing children. Although I think they die in the process. Or something. It's been a while. It's just real fuckin' weird.

I think a lot depends on the archive site. The signal to noise ratio is a lot better on sites that actively vett the fic instead of the "open an account and post" types.
The Orion Press website, for example, has pretty much ALL well-written fics, because Randy (even though I have a lot of disagreements with some of his takes on Trek) doesn't let just anyone post.

One of my particular "hobbies" is reading Harry Potter fanfic, esp AUs where Harry figures out Dumbledork is "mushrooming" him and fights back. I also prefer stories with LOGICAL ships, such as Harry/Hermione (as opposed to Harry/Ginny [aka the "Potions Princess"], which has NO basis in the first 5 books), or completely non-canon ships such as Harry/Susan Bones (there's a LOT of those for some reason).

My primary critieria is that they are well written. Of course, any high-schooler could write better fic than Books 6 and 7, but still...

Fanfic.net has a TON of good fanfic, esp Harry Potter fanfic. Some of my favorite authors are Old Crow, Cannoncansodoff, and HammonWry. Favorite stories include (but by no means are not limited to): "Muggle Summer, Wizard's Fall", "Harry Potter and the Quantum Leap", and "Not the only Readhead".

Holy cow... you know what, I had looked and looked a couple months ago. I was trying to come up with things I remembered to add in response, just some tidbits. Things like...

Guest-stars the Gorn
couple of original characters who become almost-mains
crazy (or at least slightly off balance) Ezri Dax
and heavily featuring the Trial of Gul Dukat (for ToTP).

I could swear I'd searched for "Trial of Gul Dukat" before, but decided to give it another shot just to see. Well... I found it. It's extremely long, but I'm gonna give it a shot. Hooray!

ETA: I also found an old post by the author giving an explanation of the Fic's origin. In brief,
John Burke said:
My minor claim to fame online was a nearly book-length fanfiction story that I wrote for my old Star Trek board called "The Trial of Gul Dukat." It was a DS9 story, but it also included original characters. Specifically, characters based on the board's posters.
It was kind of a roleplaying game concept. Everybody submitted a character of their own, and I wrote a story using all of them. It actually worked pretty well, at least before it got popular and I started thinking "sequel."
