Bea Arthur of Maude, Golden Girls -- RIP

Bloodwhiner

Beatrice Arthur, the tall, deep-voiced actress whose razor-sharp delivery of comedy lines made her a TV star in the hit shows "Maude" and "The Golden Girls" and who won a Tony Award for the musical "Mame," died Saturday. She was 86.

Her Maude was the first truly strong independent character on TV

:( Dorothy and Sophia are together again. RIP, Ms. Arthur, and thanks for all the laughs. GG was one of my favorite shows of all time. I was too young to watch Maude when it first aired, but I liked the re-runs.

I'll watch The Holiday Special tonight in her honor.

Er, maybe not.

RIP, Bea. You were a classic.

I just watched the Simpsons episode "Homie the Clown" the other night on my DVD set, and laughed at the comment (paraphrased):

Krusty: "Did you send those thousand roses to Bea Arthur's grave?"
Accountant: "Yes, but she's still..."
Krusty: "I don't want to hear the ends of any sentences!"

Now, of course, I'll watch that and think about Bea.
She was a great actress, I loved her in everything she did. She was always fun. Possibly my favorite thing she ever played was the Unemployment clerk in "History of the World Part 1".

Clerk: "Occupation?"
Comicus: "Stand up Philosopher!"
Clerk: "What?"
Comicus: "Stand-up philosopher. I coalesce the vapors of human experience into a viable and meaningful comprehension. "
Clerk: "Oh, a bullshit artist."

She will be missed.
Godspeed, Bea. :(

J.

I didn't even realize she was older than her TV mom Sophia (Estelle Getty). Condolences to her family, and may she rest in peace. Thank you indeed for being a friend and for providing us countless hours of entertainment.

She's a legend and will be missed, but has left an amazing legacy of work. RIP. :(

Holy Crap. I had no idea she had passed away.

I loved her. Her deadpan delivery, her snappy wit, her pride and devotion to playing strong female characters.

I loved Maude when I was a kid. There were very few strong females on TV; the few that existed were shrews and old ladies used for comic effect. Maude was a complex, intelligent, loud, flawed but vivacious, caring and decent woman, much like Bea herself.

She was one of a kind.

:(:(:(

Heard this earlier today. Sad news indeed.

Her Vera Charles in Mame was such a hoot. And everything else was wonderful as well.

A star has fallen but the heaven's are brighter.

"Ma, Ma, where are ya?"

First Estelle, and now Bea? Very sad indeed. :(

She'll be missed very much, but she leaves behind a great legacy of work.

:(

Maude and Dorothy were wonderful characters, brought to life by a unique, marvellously talented woman. RIP, Ms. Arthur.

My favorite line from Maude was "God is going to get you for that, Walter."

Sleep on Ms. Arthur. :(

:( :( :(

Aw damn... she was always a hoot. I've never seen Maude (although I did see her appear as the character on All in the Family), but I really liked her performance as Dorothy on Golden Girls. And of course, we can't forget Femputer.

This also reminds me of a play I was working on once. For our programme biographies, the director wanted us to choose a picture of something other than ourselves. For the sheer randomness of it (and because I liked her work), I went with a photo of Bea Arthur. It got a couple good laughs. :D

Thanks for the laughs Bea -- you were one of a kind.

RIP Bea, you were awesome. Where's Dorothy Zbornak when we need him? Meanwhile Bea Arthur is dancing with Greedo in the great Holiday Special in the sky.
