Aztec, which is being eyed as a 8-part mini-series for Starz, Longoria joins original executive producers Arau and Grant Turck.
Based on the best-selling book by Gary Jennings, it is set in Tenochtitlan during its empirical height just prior to its fall to Spanish invaders. Nicholas Meyer (The Odyssey) is writing the script.

The only Starz series I've tried to watch to date is Spartacus: Blood and Sand. I couldn't even make it through the first episode before turning it off.

^ I had recorded all the episodes of Spartacus on my PVR before I watched a single episode. After watching the first episode I was tempted to erase them all but I decided to watch one more episode and I ended up loving that series.

Yeah, the first episode of Spartacus was pretty terrible (and the second was just okay), but after that it turned out to be a really good show.

I've felt this way about a number of shows. I think too often we've come to expect a show has to like Alias, LOST or those type shows that instantly hit the ground running. In my 20yrs of really paying attention I think those are the minority, even now.

I haven't watched Spartacus yet either, but will be, and have heard its good if you can just get to ep. 3-4 without tuning out.

I like the idea of a series in historical Latin America, don't think we've had one there but have had historical in other eras like John Adams, Deadwood, Rome, Tudors to name a few.

I didn't like Sparatcus at all, but therte was some good acting in it, and I could see what they were trying to do. Just not my speed.

That said... I thought Gary Jennings's book was great, I rate him as one of my top 10 authors. Nicholas Meyer writing? Even better. Eva Longoria? Meh. If she's in it, she'll have a baddie role, I suspect, or the role of the main character's sister, which, if they stick to the book, is, uh, out there.

Conclusion: as long as there isn't so much fake CGI blood, it could be pretty good.

I'm generally willing to give most shows several episodes to "prove" themselves to me. That does, however, require me to be convinced by some aspect of the first episode. With Spartacus, however, I didn't see any redeeming factor in the premiere to convince me to stick it. I despised the stylization; I didn't like the contemporary language usage; and I didn't care for the acting. That show may not have been my "cup of tea," so to say, but I'll keep an eye on this Aztec since it sounds like a fresh perspective.

I wasn't grabbed by Spartacus either but Starz is pretty new to the original series biz so hopefully that's freshman blues and there's good to come. At least it's not a cop/lawyer/doctor show.
