Astrometrics Lab theory

Detached Nacelle

Captain
Red Shirt
So Voyager's astrometrics lab had to occupy a space that previously belonged to something surely, unless they did extensive excavating and remodelling and it is a state of the art tool for navigation among many other fancy things. Clearly a niche the ship needed filling. So what could this room have once been?

Cetacean ops. Yes I postulate the somewhat dark theory that the journey to the Delta Quadrant killed not only Cavit, the entirely medical staff unless the plot requires some nameless blueshirts and several other hitherto unnamed crew members that left the most dramatic vacancies possible but also an innocent dolphin or two.

Losing such an important tool for navigation would result in a need for the astrometrics lab since stellar cartography is still a functional department of its own and it would leave a space that could be filled with such a lab, just cover up the hole in the floor where the tank used to be.

The lab existed prior to the first time we saw it. We just never saw it, and it was mentioned once, before the first time we saw it. The version we saw came with updates by Harry Kim working with Seven.
