Armond White Film Review Quotes

Starbreaker

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
From controversial New York Press film "critic":

The Last Song (2010)
"Cyrus' acting ability makes Veronica's emotional make-over work."

Clash of the Titans (2010)
"Leterrier certainly shows a better sense of meaningful, economic narrative than the mess that Peter Jackson made of the interminable, incoherent Lord of the Rings trilogy."

Grown Ups (2010)
"Cheerful and surprisingly heartfelt."

G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra (2009)
" G.I. Joe must be understood as an authentic measurement of our cultural values. Its appeal to the pop-commercial synapses also demonstrates livelier filmmaking than such utter banality as Iron Man and Star Trek and Harry Potter's Half-Blooded Chintz."

Dance Flick (2009)
" It isn't highbrow -- or encumbered by scruples -- but the Wayanses retain their vulgar, adolescent derision of sex, class and race. In this bow down to Hollywood millennium, their irreverence is almost subversive."

Next Day Air (2009)
" Filmgoers who think outside the artmovie box will discover that the artful and enjoyable Next Day Air offers an episode of 21st-century black American life that August Wilson never got to."

Transporter 3 (2008)
" Forget the Oscar bait, Transporter 3 is the only movie you need to see this season.

Anybody else have any favorites?

I don't read him, but I do know that he praised the hell out of The Hurt Locker, then when everyone else started loving it, he called it overrated while "reviewing" another movie.

He also gave Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen a positive review.

I think Roger Ebert nailed it when after seeing a list similar to the one above, he took back an earlier defense of Armond White and instead declared him to be "a troll; a smart and knowing one, but a troll."

From his review of Resident Evil: Afterlife

If critics and fanboys weren't suckers for simplistic nihilism and high-pressure marketing, Afterlife would be universally acclaimed as a visionary feat, superior to Inception and Avatar on every level.

Armond White is the very definition of a contrarian. He reviews against the "norm" simply because he can and to stir up trouble.

You know, the writer of that article could have said "He was being a dick in public, like he was in his reviews," and it would have saved a ton of reading.
