Spoilers Are commodores of Starfleet admirals?

Caeruleus

Commander
Red Shirt
So are commodores actually lowest rank of admirals?

Admiral Crusher wears commodore rank pip. It could not be mistake in millions worth series with Jorg Hillenbrand and Terry Matalas:

As head of a divsion (Starfleet Medical) Crusher would be an Admiral

As administrator/head curator/director of the Starfleet Museum (not a divison)..Geordi is appropriately a Commodore.

But why admiral wears commodore rank pip?
This can quite simply be explained by the fact that Beverley had only just been recently promoted to Admiral. She could have been ranked Commodore before this career progression and not updated her pips yet. Or perhaps the ranking system has changed again. For example, there was some similar controversy in regards to Jonathan Archer’s Admiralty as a result of his pips…1233CA6D-7DE2-467C-B172-53FEB05C9C80.jpeg

I think that he was an Admiral, but some people still say Captain.

I don't know, but I would hazard a guess it was maybe budgetary? They had already made a one-pip device for Commodore Oh and a five-pip device for Admiral Clancy in season 1, and a four-pip device for Admiral Picard in season 2. I don't recall seeing that they ever did a two- or three-pip version, so maybe they just gave Crusher the one-pip version because it wasn't worth creating a whole new rank device for the last couple scenes of the series.

(Sort of the opposite thing to TNG, where they had only made two-, three- and four-pip versions, so we never saw a one- and a five-.)

If not that, then probably just a costuming error? Star Trek is rife with those.

Commodores are single star flag officers. I'm just going to assume Crusher being wearing a single star rank insignia and being called "Admiral" is a mistake. Happens a lot in the franchise. TNG had a few three-star Admirals called "Fleet Admiral" which is a five star rank. DS9 had a four star Admiral called "Rear Admiral" which is a two star rank.

Why not? They're not infallible.
Commodore has been an off and on flag rank for centuries. As others have pointed out it may depend on the job the the O-7 has.

Trek has a long and rich history of pip messups. Tuvok long had a Lt JG rank yet was always referred to as a Lt Cdr, etc.

The last time we had a totally obvious rank was Kirks admiral starburst in TWOK-TVH

I don't think those are admiral's pips on Archer, nor an admiral's uniform. Admiral's pips seem to be a solid bar rather than individual pips.

Hoshi only said he was "tapped for admiral".

But was Archer Captain, Admiral or something else when he gave his speech at the ceremony marking the founding of the Federation? I guess that the pips were displayed on both collars for purely aesthetic reasons if they do indeed represent the rank of a standard starship Captain? Unless Archer was a Fleet Captain in the Romulan War?

That looked to be a "dress blue" uniform for a line officer. I would think Archer would have been in a black uniform like Forrest had he already been promoted.

Not to mention the ceremony wasn't that long after the events of the episode. Archer wouldn't have been a 4 star admiral by then.

TOS seemed to treat commodore as both the lowest flag rank and the highest line officer rank (a commodore could command a single starship or a taskforce of starships back then).

Personally, I viewed fleet captain as a grade below commodore in TOS with three full sleeve stripes. Maybe a fleet captain was an adjutant to an admiral or was responsible for overseeing various training programs or construction projects throughout the fleet perhaps.

He can be a Fleet Captain then. We have never had a hero Fleet Captain before. Paramount+ want to cover this one with another streaming movie event? :D

I still feel like, despite it never being mentioned, Sisko was acting as a Fleet Captain to Admiral Ross in later DS9.
