Anyone dislike Kirk's hair in the TOS movies?

In TOS, Kirk looks like your classic leading man, slicked back hair, just so, with a little bit of a Superman-Kennedyish quiff to it.

Come the TOS movies and for most he has some version of a perm:

The only films which get it right, really, are the first and the last as both are mature, more conservative versions of his style in TOS:

I understand their desire to "update" his look to match the times...But am I alone in feeling his hair in TOS had a timeless look to it, and shouldn't have been messed with?

I agree, but I think they were pretty much stuck with whatever hairstyle Shatner had at the time.

I'm not nuts about Uhura's afro in TMP or the grey hairdo in TFF either, but I've learned to live with them.

I don't think the black curly wig suited Shatner at all, and I'd have preferred it if he'd kept in similar to how he had in the series.

I think he looks better with it, and apart from making him look more Kirk-like, I think it makes him look younger as well.

I never thought about it a lot, but I think you're right. He does look better with the way his hair was styled in TOS

My goodness... He looks about 20 years older with the TOS hair on the TMP body. I mean, WOW, the difference is shocking. The hair just looks light and thin and does nothing to balance the weighty wrinkles in Shatner's face.

Before this thread, I didn't have any kind of opinion about his hair in the movies (or in other series), but now I think whoever advised the change was clearly an expert in what they do.

Which is not to say the photoshop work isn't very good. Nice editing TOMFAN.

it was Shatners call (as detailed in the TMP Making of book Return to Tomorrow that came out a short while back)

Eh, I think the perm makes him look younger.

80s Shatner with the 60s slicked back hair makes him look fuller in the face and older to me.

There was discussion about this during TMP. Costume and makeup thought Shatner as Kirk would look better with something resembling his TOS look, but Roddenberry allowed the cast to go with their current preferences.

Regarding Uhura. Afros have been around for a very, very long time. They certainly weren't new in the '70s, but they are associated with that period. I personally don't think it suited her.

These pictures are great. I agree with the original poster. I always thought movie Kirk looked nothing like TV show Kirk. How did they pull off the scene in Star Trek IV where he's underwater, yet it still looks like his hair is connected to his head in a natural fashion? That may be the most underappreciated special effect in all of Star Trek.
