Another Hellboy reboot is coming sooner than you think...

https://discussingfilm.net/2023/02/16/new-live-action-hellboy-reboot-in-the-works-exclusive/

WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY???????

I mean, "From one of the guys who directed Crank" would have been a selling point fifteen years ago but now?

Still, good luck to what ever schmuck is stupid enough to slap on the red paint and horns. If your name's not Ron Perlman, you're going to need it.

The story they’re basing it on contains a character named “Tom”, who is a homage to the character of John the Balladeer which was one of Mignolas inspirations when creating Hellboy. Currently the John the Balladeer books are out of print and expensive as hell. If this reboot helps get those books back on print, I’m all for it.

From the co-screenwriter of Jonah Hex and the co-director of Ghost Rider 2.

Well, my expectations couldn't be lower, so maybe I'll enjoy it. Fingers crossed, I'd much rather enjoy a new Hellboy than not. The new game looks like it might be really cool too.

As someone who actually likes the first Ghost Rider, the second one is one of the most incoherent superhero films I've seen, only barely made watchable by Cage going full cage and that one cool scene with the earth digging machine. This Hellboy film is going to be a disaster. Maybe it will be a more interesting one then the last film, but thats about as much hope as I can muster for it.

I think the David Harbour version would have been received very well had the del Toro films not existed before. But they do, and the overwhelming majority of fans are fans of these movies, to the point that there might as well not be any source material.
And while I'd love to get a third del Toro movie, all those involved in the previous two have moved on. I think Perlman even came out a while ago stating he felt too old to return to the role.
On the other hand, Sean Connery returned to Bond, and Michael Keaton returns to Batman, so I guess there's always hope.

None of the previous movies have been financially successful and two were outright failures. I'd imagine the budget for this one is going to be pretty tiny so ironically it might actually make some money.

Reboot To Be A “Departure” & First In New Series
Guys, you really shouldn't say stuff like that while the horse is still in the gate. You just look foolish. Ask anyone that has made a Terminator movie in the last fifteen years, they'll tell you. :D

Hopefully they can get this done and done in the tone of the comics because that hasn’t happened in ANY Hellboy movie, not even Del Toro’s. The closest thing to a tone accurate Hellboy movie is The Nun. It’s moody, atmospheric, in Europe and spooky. Which is what the most memorable Hellboy stories were. It’s like a Hellboy story before the point where Hellboy himself shows up.

The last movie was supposed to be comics accurate, but focused too much on jokes and gore aka Deadpool. Hellboy has never focused over much on either. It’s usually been macabre horror with a wry quips from the big guy and sprinkled with bombastic fights, most notably at the end.

Again, hoping this gets made, is well done and is successful.

Fourth.

None of the previous movies made a profit at the box office. Hellboy 2 only happened because the original did well on DVD.
Being generous, I thought the first two worthwhile even if they didn't make enough bank, but I take your point. I originally put flop but had changed it to failure...

Hey, I love the first two. But when people complain about not getting the 3rd one there's a good reason why it didn't happen.

From what I gather, the two main reasons are 1) a industry-wide shift in the early 2010's with the rise of streaming services and the decline of physical media meant the kinds of films that do well on DVD were harder to get funding for. 2) That when it came down to it, Mignola ultimately didn't want GDT to make the third one and instead backed the reboot. GDT was ready to go, and Perlman ready to come back as late as 2017.

It could have happened if the will was there on Mignola's part. If Guillermo del Toro hadn't been tied up in a succession of floundering projects; 'Halo', 'The Hobbit', and 'At The Mountains of Madness' that sapped his availability. 'Pacific Rim' proved he still had the ability to make a financially successful crowd pleaser and I recall reports that Legendary were onboard to work with him again on 'Hellboy'.

Point being; profit margins alone isn't what killed the second sequel. Indeed it was mostly unfortunate timing.

The original point was a failure to begin a series. The first Hellboy movie got a sequel, so you can't count it as a failure to launch, regardless of how it got there.
